you will have to remove the trim around the cargo area to get to the nuts that the other side of the strut fastens with.

Other than that its not a bad job if you have a friend to hold up the hatch for you.

There are wide metal retaining tabs holding the ball, just pry a small screwdriver under and slightly twist, pulling the strut at that point and it will come free. Either prop the hatch with a board our have a fried hold it up or will you'll be taking an aspirin afterwards.

I have to ask.

Why would you buy used struts?
You can get new ones from any parts store, Autozone and Advance carry them, about $60.00 for a set (would have to order and wait about 3 days to get them), but at least you wouldn't have to worry about the old used units not having enough support.

What ever you do, don't lube the shafts up with WD40 like I did years ago on an 86 I owned. I thought it would make the hatch go up and down much smoother. The only thing it did was to make them totally collapse. Too slippery.

Autozone and Advance carry them, about $60.00 for a set.

Is that true? thank you for telling us. I hadn't tackled that issue just yet as I thought it would be more of a hassle and cost more.

This is a quick, easy and inexpensive job for this weekend...thanks.

Here's Advance Auto parts page.

I've ordered clutch cylinders from them, and it took 5 days to get to Wi. From Ga.

I've also bought the Strong Arm brand struts 2 years ago for my Blazer, still working good.

What sucked was the first trip to Autozone got me two lefts. Well they didn't have the right. Kept the left and two months later I ordered the right. I kid you not, the one that came in was a left and it looked like the one I returned two months prior. I took it home and figured out how to loosen the clamp head and turn the electrical connector around. So now I'm set to go. It was an ordeal, so make sure you are getting one of each.

Just checked out RockAuto.com and the lift struts were around 30 bucks, I'd make sure that 8 bucks is what your referring to.

Was there a problem with needing seperate ones for left and right, and the replacements not letting you hook up the defroster properly?

I recall reading about this before...

I need new hatch struts, mine are original and have lost most of their juice.
