Well I just rolled my 86 off the ramps and it was running fine, rich but fine..Then the float stuck and it flooded out in the middle of the culdesac..Got that fixed, started it up again and in a cloud of white smoke I was off..My son waves at me pointing on the ground to a small puddle of oil..Pull it back on the lift and start it again and it was like oil was shot out of a hose!!! All on the right side into the radiator and beyond..Shut it down right away...I'm letting it drip dry.. What is running on that side of the engine?? I saw the oil cooler line there and a couple trans lines, but everything is still hot and dripping..Will check the FSM,but thought I would ask here also..I had a small leak in front earlier which I was going to address after I got it running correctly..I guess that was my"Small Leak" that needs addressing now

do you have an aftermarket oil cooler? GM didn't offer one.

Spray the area down with brake cleaner so you can see the leak better, too.

Bogus..I got an oil cooler..I'm not sure if it's part of the Z51 package but it's there..I'm hopeing that's what blew..can't see it from underneath(the leak) ..will have to look under the A/C pulley, that's where it runs up from under the car...Heck I'm not even sure that's the leak yet..

the factory oil cooler was more of a warmer! It passed coolant through the filter housing.

if you have an aftermarket cooler, well, gee. all bets are off!

Sorry about the leak. Hope it's an easy fix.

I saw pics of the hood on DC....very nice work

I know you said it was a Greenwood, but what hood did you start with? Was it the one with the "ram air" snorkels in front?

Beautiful work.

Yes that's the one...It's a stock hood..I modified the scoop because It was too low and I didn't like the "wart" look...It was the only one I found that would span the rise in the stock hood..Thanks for the compliment

Alright if you insist...Please note that the Red Duct Tape was a little known option in 86..Very valuable now..I'm waiting for the grommets from the dealer ..Had to remove for scoop attachment..

Don't know if this helps but my 400 has a plate that bolts onto the old Mechanical Fuel Pump Hole.

There were 2 screw holes there that would leak when you cranked it up.

Is the bulge a kit or did you scratch build that?

Very neat... very cool!!!

Any luck with the oil leak?

Thanks All..It's a Greenwood that I modified...Raised it 3/4" and formed it into the hood so it doesn't have that "wart" look..
Yes I have that plate also..Will investagate...I sprayed the front of the engine and cross member with brake clean and will restart and see what I can see

yeah but there's not much pressure if any behind that fuel pump plate so I don't see how it'd shoot out of there.

As bogus said, there's no oil in the factory oil cooler lines.

The trans cooler lines do have ATF in them though.

Interesting that you only got one hapless reply over "there". And I am not much help to begin with.

To the real Guru's He did say that the oil had a gas smell to it.

Someone told me one of those holes by the lower part of the timing cover on the block go into the oil passage, but I wasn't able to find anything of the sort.

This was when my truck was leaking, but it turned out to be a seal in the mechanical fuel pump that was letting oil in and it was coming out the vent hole above the fuel pump diaphram. But nothing in there is under any pressure, the oil was just sort of spilling out and then getting blown everywhere by the fan. Dumped about 1 qt in 100 miles.

My favorite quik way of finding an oil leak is to clean real well and spray a healthy dose of foot spray near suspect area leaving a dry white powder that shows the offending leak easily most times, washes off and no more itchy parts. Aloha
