I hate Sony car audio. It sucks.

Now, from a purely asthetic standpoint, it does fit the 90 dash perfectly. However, the 94 dash is all black... and the silver would jump out big time.

That sums this thread up for me. I couldn't agree more.

I'm an audiophile. And I have done work at a world class shop. If you want a real system, feel free to post up your budget and I will design something.

Oh.....tell me how ya really feel Andy!! LOL!!
I'll make note of that and look for an eclipse like Mekanic suggests. Got a model number that would fit? I'm not the total audiofile type. I would like to hear the music over the motor sometimes(but only occasionally, as I love the sound of my Lt1. Other than the 5.4L in my Tahoe, This is the first V8 I've had in years.....I don't think the thrill of the purr will wear off any time soon.)

Budget? Ha! I'm window shopping! Exhaust comes next. I was actually looking for a stop gap in the Sony. There is a Blaupunkt in it now that sounds like crap and the previous owner hacked the dash to install it. I'll have to take a picture and show you. It makes me want to try and find a Blose just to clean up the dash for a while!

Thanks for the offer on design Mekanik. I may hit you up in the future!

Any time man!

As far as one that will fit, any will fit fine provided you get a good quality dash kit for your specific vehicle, and the specific size head unit you plan on installing.

single din, din and a half, or double din (factory size)

Also, Eclipse BY FAR makes the best head units in my opinion..

IF you plan on using an external amplifier. Thats what Eclipses are made for, and if you plan on using the internal Mosfet power from the head, it will suffer.

If you don't plan on using an external amplifier, I would recommend a Clarion head.

Heres the pic. the unit is a a Blaupunkt BPV 655. See what has been done to the bezel?! I got a replacement bezel but do not want to have to do something like the last guy did....that looks pretty bad. To make matters worse, I pulled the rear speaker boxes and found the original Bose speakers....no amps left and hand written on the back of one of the speakers is "8 ohms".....sorry charlie, these suckers are 1 ohm. So you see, I do need something to tide me over for a while. I don't think just any unit will fit. I'll be on the look out for an eclipse. I think I remember reading somewhere that the 5303 is a decent unit if you can find one.

Check out www.crutchfield.com.

Enter your car info, and the site will show you what'll fit.

Good site for window shopping.

These Naks have always been intriguing to me...
Anyone have experience with them? It'd probably look good in a late model C4.

Yeah, Crutchfield is great for their catalog, and has top notch customer service. Hell they even subscribed me to car and driver for 2 years.

Unfortunately though their prices are pretty damn high. But I think I can support that. They are the only online Alpine dealer I think.

Thats the kind of face plate I would like too CC. Not cluttered-up with excess disco lights and shit and they certainly have a decent reputation. Some reviews seem to say that there are issues with the reliability of the cd player, but, that seems to be the norm. The only problem is the width measurement is 7 inches and the opening in the bezel is 6 3/4. Do you guys think it could be mounted deep enough so as not to have to cut the bezel opening?

Heres a double din unit I found while browsing crutchfield's site. Pioneer FH-P8000BT. Not too flashy. Got anything against pioneer guys?

I hate double din as much as I hate Sony.

The problem I have with DD heads is that they are not stocked with the latest and greatest technology. They charge a ton for the size and don't give the features. I had a Pioneer DD and was never happy with the SQ.

I have found Crutchfield fairly priced, really. The problem is that other online vendors sell the same stuff, they just are not authorized, and as such, they don't offer warrantees. Crutchfield DOES offer warrantees.

Damn you guys are a tough crowd! (but I do appreciate it)
I had a bid in on an eclipse 5303 and cd changer on ebay, but the guy ended the auction early. WTF? So you haveconverted me!! no more Crack OK !

Andy, I saw an old thread of your's "over there" and it had a referrence to a guy that goes by VrumVrum that makes, or made, a corvette embossed faceplate to fill in the space below a single din unit. really clean install. But I can't seem to locate him

Why don't you just get a factory pullout from a newer Chevy?

The new ones now probably have in-dash cd changers and mp3 capability.

Nak also had a plain looking single-din unit with a cd changer built into it!

Are you suggesting from a c5 or c6...are they complete tuners or just a dummy like in the c4. Any one know any specs on them? I thought they were coded to only work with certain vehicles though

NO! C5 heads will not work with the C4 bose.

The only time this trick works is on the early C4 Bose systems... there you can adapt a 93+ Fbody Bose head. The later C4 system is so messed up, nothing works with it.

Yeah but as long as you get a normal head unit with internal amp, and not some crack-whore Bose stuff, or something out of a 9-speaker system, you're good to go.

Actually I think Ford has better head units than GM. They're made by visteon and one other mfg I can't recall.

Aqua -

I missed this thread first time around. I think you are seeing there are a lot of opinions on stereos here.... I have personally had several different brands, most higher end. I had eclipse, didn't care for it personally, but they are good quality. I have also had clarion which I liked, pioneer was my favorite. I would check circuit city, see if they have any open box deals. Sometimes you can get a good deal that way and they will install it if you don't feel inclined. You are on a budget, after all (aren't we all!).

Regarding aesthetics, the PO put a silver headunit in mine and it looks like ass. The only silver thing in the whole dashboard. It's not a very high end unit, either. I have to redo the entire thing because they butchered it putting it in, too. I'll get to that later.

Let us know what you decide.

I would NEVER let the chimps at Circuit City install a stereo in any Vette. Period. End of story.

For every good installer they have, they have 1000 that suck. And that one good one? Once he gets past the stigma of working for CCity, they get a gig at a real install shop...

True. I knew a guy at the one by my old house, though. He was good. I was just saying that sometimes they would have good deals when I'd go in there.

Off topic, I just bought a used pioneer I'll be putting in the dash next weekend.

Hey if I use the word Alpine around here will you guys start screaming "CrackHead!!!!!" I was in Best buy today looking.I found an Alpine CDA9884 and also an Alpine IDAX200. Both sounded decent through an alpine 100w amp and 6 1/2" speakers. Could even get away without the amp temporarily....

If you get it installed at Circuit City, the stereo will probably work, and your car probably won't catch on fire. Now that's what I call Peace of Mind.

I don't dislike Alpine... my problem is with their QC of late. I have a feeling, tho, that they finally gave up on China as their manufacturing source...

I have an alpine 7998 and LOVE the SQ of it. So clean.

The real problem is that no one is making affordable unpowered heads. The 7998 was about the last of that genre, and it was $750 - 5 years ago! I hate internal amps and don't want one - at all. they suck.
