I'm going to replace the plug wires on my 87 L98. Right now, the wires seem to be run well, but I doubt it's the factory routing. There are no retainers, it's done with zip ties. So I have a two part question.

First, how do I find the factory routing?

Second, has anyone used any alternate routing clips that work better? Stuff that might dress up the engine a little nicer? And if the factory style clips are the way to go, where is a good place to get them?

Thanks.

I'm sure I saw a diagram of the plug wire route in my FSM for a 89. Should be the same? I bought the retainers from my local GM parts counter. Here is the only part# I have, it's for the 4 wire close to the distributor. Don't have part# for the 3 or 2 wire.

Thanks! Didn't even think to look in the FSM, thought it would be too simple for it to be in there. I'll check it out.

But I am interested in some of the non factory retainers, like the bow tie one that anchors to the valve cover. Are they any good? Anyone use them?

Here are a couple pics of my engine. I recently installed some plug wire looms that I ordered from Summit Racing. They attach with the lower valve cover bolts, and I really like the look.....neat, but not flashy.

Great looking engine. Well done.

Couple of questions:
Do you have a larger size of those pics so I can see some detail?
I'm close to Summit, what part # did you use?

Those might not work on your car anyways, you have centerbolts.

Yep. I sure do.

Ok, these should work. I'm just undecided which one I like better. Opinions?

Personally, I like the 2nd one. That's the same exact looms I have, except they fasten to the "center bolt" mounts instead of the perimeter mounts such as on my earlier engine. The concept (simplicity) is the same. Once you see them, you'll know what I mean. One other thing to consider.......these are sized to specific spark plug wire sizes (mine are 8mm). If your wires are too small, they will not be "tight" in the looms. Good luck with whichever you choose........making yourself happy is what this hobby is all about anyway.

Oh, and if you still want to see some bigger pics, here's a link to my photobucket site:

Thanks for the feedback.
That's the one I bought. Went to Summit yesterday.

I have new AC Delco wires. Aren't those 8mm?

Yea, the Delco should be 8 mm. I use Taylor 8mm's in the stock looms.

My stock looms are gone. Nothing but zip ties in there now. I cut the airbox and painted it red, the red looms will tie in. Decided on the more subdued looms rather than the ones with the bowtie thingy.
