hi guys,
im thinking of getting rid of the old 1991 stering wheel on my 91 vette and getting a aftermarket sports steering wheel!!
as im sick of having the standard wheel on there and i dont mind at all getting rid of the air bag and i like the look of some of these nice aftermarket steering wheels!!

can this be done??

are gm boss steering wheel kits avaialble for conversions for corvettes ??

what is safest and best way to disable the air bag system with out getting hurt??

any ideas and help would be great.
thanks guys
cheers

I've seen it done, so it is possible. I think, as far as the air bag, you just have to disconnect the battery. I read somewhere that it is safer to wait for ten or fifteen minutes after you disconnect the battery before removing the wheel.

But let someone else confirm or discredit my info before you tear into it. I'm not a pro, by any means.

the airbag isn't that sensative. Remove the fuse.

I would also get into the DIC and remove the bulb for the SIR warning light.

Finally, be aware that the steering column on an airbag equipped car is much different than a non-airbag column. Mostly, they don't collapse the same way, in fact, they are designed to support the airbag and the occupant.

So in a wreck, the aftermarket wheel could become a deadly thing.

Just so you know.

I've seen it in a C5 - not sure about a C4.

hi guys,
thanks for your replies.

i read some where also that near the base of the steering column/wheel there is a yellow wire with a tagged connectror there to unplug also.
so,
1/ remove fuse,
2/ disconnect battery,
3/ disconnect yellow wire/plug and carefully remove air bag.

i found # 2702 is a gm boss hub
kit to suit a corvette with tilt/telescopic column which will work on 84-93 vettes.
they sell for around $ 70.00

then i saw this nice steering wheel called a Isota modena corsa, cost about $138 which has billet centre a poly wheel base for your hands.
this wheel looks really cool actually, the hand grips on each side start at 8-10 o clock and 2-4 o clock style.
it is not completely round all the way like a normal steering wheel is.
i will post up a link /picture tonight.
cheers

Also, your insurance company may be giving you a bit of a break because of your airbag (though, as my insurance agent said, if the airbag goes off, they're already writing checks). So they may not be happy with you if you remove it.

How would a non airbag steering wheel be dangerous due to the column difference? I am not following. Airbags can do more harm than good in some cases.

Yup...
I'd be checking with your insurance company about deleting the air bag.

Not a good thing in thier eyes I'm sure.

I believe some non-airbag equipped cars have steering columns that are designed collapse and get out of the way of your chest. That is, your chest can push the wheel down in an accident. If a car is designed with an airbag, the steering column might be more rigid, and not designed to "give" as the chest collides with the steering wheel.

Thanks. I keep my steering wheel as far back as it will go and the same with the seat. Im taller so it makes it more comfortable for me.

I wouldn't worry, by the time the insurance co finds out, he'll be dead anyways.

Just carry the spare wheel and some tools with a pre-deployed airbag in the back. When you crash, if your arms are still functional, swap the steering wheels before the po-po show up.

hi guys,
well look at it this way,iv been driving cars now here for 15 years now with out a single crash ,touch wood rite and none of the cars has had a air bag,so im not missing much am i really!
im used to driving cars with out air bags.
my daily driver which is my wifes car doesnt even have a air bag.
i dont see what the fuss and issue is about !!!!
look at racing cars for example,if they thought it was a issue at 200 mph, would they have a air bag installed??
well the 600 rwhp v8 super profeesional super cars here dont use them.
i wil take a gamble, there is no promises with a air bag or not.
thanks
glen
