We just got an e-mail from SimonDelivers, where we have ordered our groceries online for the past 7 or 8 years - due to rising fuel and grocery costs, they're shutting down for good in 2 weeks.

Bummer dude!

Anybody else offering that service? Seems that if folks are willing to pay, somebody would do it.

7 years... Damn! I don't even know if I've had email that long...

I know a non-big chain grocery store in one of the suburbs was providing something similar, but nothing around here. This company had been in business for 9 years, and we signed up as soon as they were serving our area - it's been great, and I will really miss it. They had a unique just-in-time inventory system that allowed it to work, but grocery margins are very slim, and prices must be rising faster than they can afford to sit on inventory, even for a short time.

My sister uses peapod.com to get her groceries delivered. I still don't understand getting groceries delivered, but that's just me....

Has anyone tried using Vons/Ralphs or other big stores to order groceries delivered? Is it like Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, but without the hanky panky?

I guess you have to order a day or more in advance, but I'm friggin lazy, and end up spending more than I intended everytime I go in there.

In south Florida, there seems to be a Publix and CVS on every corner. Our publix is a little over one mile away and CVS is less than one mile.

Guess it depends on where you live.

P.S. Crude oil was down $6.40 yesterday and $1.90 this morning. Demand destruction world wide.

That was the beauty of it - you'd order exactly what you wanted, no impulse buying, and no putting up with inconsiderate morons clogging the aisles. Nice to get 160 lbs. of softener salt brought to your door, too. I saw on the news last night that there's a couple of possible alternatives, one of which doesn't serve our area yet. Meanwhile, maybe I'll delegate grocery-schlepping duty to my son....
