I got this in an email and haven't checked all of the math. But it's still a lot of food for thought. There's not a chance in hell that our government will ever regain a manageable size or anything close to what the founding fathers intended. It really doesn't matter who gets in there, we're all still going to continue to get rump-ridden....

The next time you hear a politician use the
word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about
whether you want the 'politicians'
spending
YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
but one advertising agency did a good job of
putting that figure into some perspective in
one of it's releases.

A.
A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

C.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were
living in the Stone Age.

D..
A billion dollars ago was only
8 hours and 20 minutes,
at the rate our government
is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain...
let's take a look at New Orleans .....
It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

Louisiana Senator,
Mary Landrieu (D)
is presently asking Congress for
250 BILLION DOLLARS
to rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number...
what does it mean?

A.
Well... if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans
(every man, woman, and child)
you each get $516,528.

B.
Or... if you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.

C.
Or... if you are a family of four. ..
your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington , D. C

HELLO!
Are all your calculators broken??

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago...
and our nation was the most prosperous in the world.

We had absolutely no national debt...
We had the largest middle class in the world...
and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What happened?
Can you spell 'politicians?'

And I still have to

Like Goldwater said, "a billion here, a billion there - pretty soon you're talking about serious money." He must be spinning in his grave.

Is it possible to bring back crucifiction? Maybe just a little blood letting. Put them in stocks? (not bonds). Interesting thought there. Stocks and bonds are imprisonment devices. Oh well....... The party's over, (both democrat and republican), It's time to call it a day. We can sent all of them back home. There is no more money to spend. For all intents and purposes; We are broke ....

I think a nice market crash is a good thing.

Like hitting the "reset" button. Until it happens, nobody ever bats an eye at the problems.

A little reality.

There were taxes 100 years ago... maybe not those, but there were taxes. How else does the government raise income? It sure didn't get it from the goodness of the hearts of citizens.

The US government has run in debt since the 1860s, IIRC. I think there were a couple of years in the 1880s where there wasn't any debt, but that's about it.

Federal Income Tax started in 1913; and paycheck deductions started in 1942 or so, don't remember the year.

This page seems to have the relationships I was pointing out.

There have always been taxes in history. Forever. Ever since there were kings and peasants. As far as the US, think about the Boston Tea Party...hmmmm. How about "no taxation without representation"?

When I used to do bookkeeping/taxes, we had a picture of an old tax return on the wall from the early 1900s. It was a business return from some huge company and their tax rate was around 90%. Yikes!

Matthew

Edit - ps, the first personal income tax was in the 1860s to fund the Civil War.

And I bet it was advertised as temporary, just to fund the war.

Sort of like everytime they have a "temporary" supplemental tax increase down here after every big earthquake.
