Any experts here?

I've tweaked these things a bunch of times, but it seems no matter how much I try to adjust them down, the drivers side one still runs past the edge of the windshield and hits the windshield trim.

I installed a shorter 18" blade on that side which allowed me to adjust them closer together without crashing, this means they actually park below the edge of the hood now.

But it still goes past the window edge.

And unrelated, today the motor or switch started acting up. It would just stop randomly at midstroke or at the top for a few seconds.

Yea, I had the same problem and fixed it. I'll have to pull the FSM tonite just so I can remember how I did it.

What size was on there?

I think 20" came with it.

I looked through the 84 manual that's on my pc, but it only talks about rebuilding the motor and how the electrics work.

Maybe GM added more info after having tons of call backs over the years.

I had the same problem with mine hitting also. And my 89 has 20 inch. I'll try to dig my book out tonight and find the procedure I used to adjust the travel.

The later years have the drivers arm kinked at more of an angle right?

Seems like this helps avoid crashing and could also keep the top edge of it further away from the window trim.

CC, this is out of the 92 FSM but,

You have to pull the screen to get at the transmission, where the motor is hooked to the arms.

1. Remove the right arm & wiper at the shaft
2. Loosen, but do not remove, the transmission nuts
3. Rotate the left arm assy to a position slightly below the blade stops ( where the arm rests st the stopped position).
4. Tighten the transmission nuts to spec
5. Position the right arm slightly below the blade stops & install the arm on the shaft
6. Lift both arms up over the blade stops
7. Ck pattern 7 park position
8. Dr. side gap - blade to reveal 20mm at the top of the blade. Pass side - 50mm

Hmm. Tried tightening it when it was down past the stop.

I'll try going even more. I was afraid it'd just loosen up or strain something if the motor was trying to pull it down past the stop.

If I remember right, I put mine about 1 1/4 inches below the stop to get the right gap.
It's worked perfect ever since but I've only turned the wipers 4 times in 5 years.

I copied this tidbit from somewhere on the internet a while ago thinking it might be useful. Hope it helps.

"from Jerry Watts, retired Engineer at the GM Corvette Action Center in Bowling Green, KY:

If you drive your Vettes in the rain, you may noticed that the wipers need an ajustment. This problem can be fixed with a ratchet, a 10mm socket, and a small screwdriver.

At the bottom edge of the windshield, driver's side, is a black screen with a small pop-off screen about 1" x 2.5" towards the inside edge. Find its two solid black spots and gently push in and up with the screwdriver to remove it.

On each wiper arm you will see two 10mm nuts. To make the adjustment, dampen the windshield and turn the wipers on just long enough to get them to where you can move them up or down, then loosen the nuts with the 10mm socket. On the driver's side, the wiper should come up to, but not into, the blackout area along the windshield's edge, on the passenger side, about two inches from the molding and below hood level in the rest position."

That's about what my book calls for also. I do remember having to position the arms below the stops also. And I did the adjustment about 4-5 times before getting a happy medium. One tip I have learned over the years when working with wipers: have a spray bottle of water and mist the wind shield when "parking" the blades. They go to the correct position much better.

What about adjustment for parkin' in 'intermittent'?

My '87, and my '94 both stop/rest a couple of inches above 'park' when in intermittent mode.

This normal?
