Haven't had a chance to bs on here lately so I figured I'd give you guys an update:

Old engine is out and stripped down to the shortblock. Necessary parts are all swapped over to the "new" shortblock. Old trans is out, new trans is in. Hoping to set the new shortblock in on Sunday. Would like to do it tomorrow (Saturday) but my wife has talked me in to going to New Jersey to buy a 2007 Audi A4 quattro. She does need an all wheel drive and her current car (2005 Stratus RT) is almost paid off so it isn't so bad to trade now. And I love that she chose and Audi, they are nice! Even better, it's Audi certified so we get the extended warranty and 3.9% financing!

Depends on the term and new or used. On a used car you can get 0.9% through Audi but only for 24 month financing. I don't want that high of a payment or it will cut into my vette funding. 60 mos on a 2007 ends up being 3.9%. That is the best I could find on a used car for 60 mos. For my wife's car, we usually finance for 60 mos and keep for about 45 or 48 mos.

Sorry about the crappy pics, all I had with me was my pos camera phone. I'll get a bunch of good pics as the assembly process takes place.

I love it that my son is to the age that he wants to help and likes turning wrenches. He wanted to take the valve covers off, I told him to find the torx socket and ratchet and do it. He did, by himself. Then he removed the rocker arm nuts, rocker arms and pushrods. He loved it and so did I!

An Audi? Get a Subaru... 3.9% is a great rate... considering that getting a loan of ANYKIND right now is damned near impossible. Just be sure to trade the Audi before the extended warrantee ends.

Those pics look like they were taken with a Polaroid about 40 years ago. Cool effect!!!

What are the specs of the new shortblock?

Subaru's aren't bad but it is hard to beat the fit and finish and quality of an Audi for the price. They have so many features standard that other companies either offer optional or not at all.

Actually, since it is an '07, the interest rate ended up being 2.9% for 60 mos. The Audi used car certification gives us the bumper to bumper warranty to 50,000 miles, then a $85 deductible warranty that is all but bumper to bumper to 100,000 miles. Covers all but normal wear items.

The "new" shortblock is actually a used shortblock. It has about 3,000 miles on it. I got it for $800. It is an old school 383. It's a 2 piece rear seal, passenger side dipstick block. Has a stock 400 crank and rods machined to fit in the 350 block. Has Speed Pro forged pistons and a flat tapped 230/236 cam and a double roller timing chain. Wish I could have went roller but the shortblock came with the cam and with my budget it isn't worth it for me to replace the cam when it is the duration and lift I wanted. I installed new Rhodes vari-duration lifters. I installed the shortblock yesterday and bolted it up to the new trans. The only possible issue I see is that, with the balance plate installed between the flywheel and engine, the starter gear only engages about 1/2 or just a hair more of the width of the flywheel teeth. The balance plate pushes the flywheel just a hair further from the block. Maybe 1/2 or so engagement is enough, I don't know. I would think a longer nose starter would be too long, I might have to try to slot the starter bolts. Anyone know if 1/2 or so of engagement between the starter gear and flywheel gear is enough???

Bogus, for the rest of the build I have AFR 195 street ports, and and HSR intake with tons of other supporting mods. Going with a .035 quench distance, 11.1:1 SCR, 8.9 DCR. Also, I'm running a 175 shot and hope to go up to a 200 shot this year.

Good progress,

BTW, torquing down the passenger side head with the short block in is a real struggle.

Boy, you are not kidding. I did it this way for 2 reasons...I wanted to see if I could get the top bellhousing bolts from above with the heads off (and the top 4 were easy after removing the motor mounts, lowering the motor, and using a 9/16" ratchet wrench).....and I don't have an engine stand anyway so the car is the engine stand.

I used alot of different length extensions and a swivel socket on a few of them.

I was afraid the swivel socket would throw the torque wrench out of wack but it didn't. I got on a couple of the bolts that I could get with just a socket (like bolt #1 in the sequence) and I used the swivel at an angle like needed on the bottom row of bolts. I torqued it that way, then took the swivel off and got back on the bolt and checked the torque. It was good. Bumped the wrench setting up a few pounds and tried again, and the bolt moved just a hair before the click.

Was a pain but I know it is torqued right so it is ok.

More progress made yesterday. Wish I could have trashed my old headers and bought a set of ceramic coated but the new trans chewed up the last of my budget for this project.

Got it all back together yesterday, with the exception of a handful of small things I still want to do. I don't have the new tune yet but I fired it up on the old tune. I had to hold the throttle forward pretty far to get it to idle but it idled great. I have a wideband gauge and it read fine otherwise I would have aborted till I got the new tune. I held it at about 1800 rpms for a while to break the cam in. The cam was used but the lifters are new so I treated it like a new break in. All seems great.

The Rhodes lifters do tick but aren't nearly as noisy as I expected. The valvetrain with roller rockers was fairly noisy even on the old combo, with the rocker noise the lifters aren't that noticeable.

I can't wait to get the new tune and some 1/2 decent weather so I can road test it.
