Let's see your Double din set up or any head unit set up I want a new head unit and I am thinking about a double din. Just wanted to see if anyone has had any problems with installing a double din.

DD's fit easily enough... but they are pricy and just don't have the features. Beleive it or not, $$ for $$ you can get a single DIN head that sounds better and has more SQ related features.

I had a Pioneer a few years back... it was DD and fit just fine... but it sounded like crap.

My current head unit is an Alpine 7998. It is a 1/2 din head, with a 1.5 din face that powers out. Sounds fabulous!!!

Moving this to Audio.

I do agree that getting an adapter to use a single DIN head unit will be cheaper, look better, and give you more options.

The reducer kit is available on Ebay super cheap and here is even a head unit I suggest.

http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?f ... t.display&Product_ID=7537

Pair it with a small 2 channel amp, some good kick panel speakers, and you'll be all set. If you MUST run rear speakers power them off of the head unit, not an amp, so the fronts are the focus and set the listening stage.

If you're keen on a sub, get a 4 channel amp, run the fronts off of channels 1 and 2 and bridge 3 and 4 for the sub.

I can suggest other components.

Most DD units are horrible and lacking. Same with the 1.5 units.

My solution.

Mojo - I have an older single DIN conversion plate if you want it. PM me.

Jeff - My 7998 is far from lacking. But it is a single din with the wacky face trick thing.

Alpine has really gone to shit since they moved their facility from Japan to China. The headunit I have is from 95 if I remember, never given me a lick of issues. It's been in two different vehicles now, and in the ZR-1 since 2000.

I agree. My head is from 2003, and was made in Japan, IIRC.

The 7998, as far as I am concerned, is the last great headunit that Alpine has made.

When it dies, I will replace it with an Eclipse.

When it comes to stereo equipment i have a reputation
of being somewhat anal. I believe you get what you pay for
buy good stuff it sounds like good stuff.
I have been wanting to upgrade my ZR1's stereo system for years, and fianally pulled the trigger this year.

I bought a Pioneer avic z3 head unit.
it is a double din, and does it ALL.
mp3, ipod, cd, dvd, navigation, backup camera
it has a built in hard drive that allows you to record
your favorite cd's right onto the stereo, bluetooth.
matter of fact i can't think of a stereo function it does not have. voice activated. ect... it is a little pricey.
around 1000.00 not including speakers, subs or amps.
i had mine done by a pro. 2 alpine 10 inch subs, custom box
powered by 2 500 watt amps. Alpine door speakers and 6x9'a
in the rear. this thing rocks, i could not be happier
here are a few pics, you can program what picture you want
it is also xm or sirrous enabled.

The AVIC is a nice piece! No question.

I should have qualified... there are good DD heads, but my got they are pricy.

And then they are still lacking on some features I find very important - like high voltage RCA outs and things like that. I also wish they didn't have internal amps...

I have a Kenwood DDX512 in my '93. Absolutely no cutting of the factory dash support required. I have come to really like the Kenwood units, I have one in my 325 (flip screen, single din) as well as in the X5 (DDX512, same as the '93 vette). Great units at a great price. Of course, I've heard nothing but great things about the Pioneer units as well.

I'll post pic's when I get the vette out of winter storage - hopefully any week now!!!!
