How would you vote?

The California State Special Election Propositions for May 2009

Proposition 1A - state budget process/state "rainy day" fund
Proposition 1B - state education funding
Proposition 1C - state lottery
Proposition 1D - children's health services
Proposition 1E - public health services
Proposition 1F - lawmakers' salaries

Bottom lines

Proposition 1A - Raises taxes and renews "temp tax" for 2 more years
Proposition 1B - Raises taxes in year 2011 and thereafter
Proposition 1C - Repairs bogus state lottery system
Proposition 1D - Redirects appropriated monies away from children's health services
Proposition 1E - Redirects appropriated monies away from public health services
Proposition 1F - Elected state officials cannot vote in their raises when the state general fund is expected to end the year in deficit.

IMHO only 1F has merit. Yet I see officials moving funds to the GF for their own pockets.

I would like to get a piece of bogus' state lottery system.

Realignment of funds is a way for governments to raid cash heavy funds and redistribute the wealth among other programs that don't have sustainable assets. Robbing Peter to pay Paul. I am more in favor of program cuts and/or elimination. Sure, some people will suffer. No one is entitled to freedom from suffering. That's why it is so important to make to make good life choices and decisions. But with the decay of moral fiber in this country, I guess another way to resolve some issues is to throw money at them.

I didn't spend a whole lot of time going through it, but I think I voted no, no, no, yes, yes, yes

Yes I'm a callous bastard that hates sick children.

1C sounds good at first, but I recall it had some strings attached that I thought were prone to abuse. 1A and 1B looked like short term quick fixes with a serious long term cost.

Cept that in a few years up the road they'll raise taxes to recover the lost funds for children and health care. There are plenty of other places they can cut or rob funds from. Why pick from a hot topic area?

You can't rob Peter to pay Paul--That makes Peter sore, and you can't do business with a sore Peter!

They'll raise taxes either way.

If they rob Peter to pay Paul, they'll raise taxes to pay off Peter.

If they don't rob Peter, they'll just raise taxes for Paul.

I haven't read the information guide yet. Anything that raises taxes or costs additional money (OURS) automatically receives a no vote from me. They need to cut the fat before they reach into our pockets anymore. It's astonishing that after so many years of growth that this state doesn't have a large budget surplus. I think that alone is a good indicator of the mindset of those geniuses in Sacramento (Ahnold says, "Sah-kree-man-toe"). They squander every penny they get their sticky mitts on, then they have the audacity to come back to us for more. When they initially sold us on the lottery they promised that the additional lottery income would be directed to education, then they took the money that used to go into education and spent it elsewhere and education didn't really realize the benefits from increased funding that they led us to believe would occur. I think they're grifters and con-men that play a never ending shell game while borrowing into our future. And, in the spirit of the impending May 1st rallies, I'll declare out loud that those children's programs are disproportionately burdened by the children of illegal aliens. There, I said it =). They can take an additional nickel from me when they pry it from my cold, dead hands. That's it, I'm stocking up on canned goods and hunkering down. Standing by for derogatory characterizations hurled in my generally stingy direction.

I saw the health and children's funding as a social program for providing services mainly to non-taxpayers. So if its a choice between raising taxes or taking from those programs, its an easy choice for me.

Seems the "people" have spoken.

If this were a presidential election, it would be considered a "landslide".

Lol, the landslide on 1F is a nice gesture, even if it's a miniscule amount of money (and could still cost more to implement than it might save).

CA fiscal situation is about the equivalent of a drunken sailor on leave... who has run out of cash.

And these damned props... when the state is broke, they spend millions to run some special election.

Makes all sorts of sense, eh?

Yep! and the next hat trick will be making us feel bad that we didn't vote in favor of their next drinking binge.

No problem. Some moronic judge will claim the election was unconstitutional and overturn our votes again.

It is. Sorry, had to say that.

People and businesses have been moving across the border for years for exactly the reasons you guys point out.

Two stories in the news this week, one on how Ca. is trying to entice businesses to move back (yea, that's gonna happen) and stories about how the liberals in our legislature want to raise taxes all over the place. The Gov says he'll veto any tax increase.

It was mentioned in another thread how any taxes/programs become "essential", for the legislators anyway.

Belt tightening is only for the taxpayers.

How much did this pointless election cost us anyways? You'd think they could do some sample polling on their props first before wasting a whole lotta tax money on a sure failure.

I mean, none of the others were even close to passing. The last one was just a booby prize.
