David Brand in the Lotus spun in the right-hander going onto the no-name straight.....next through were a few Miatas that were nose to tail, the first went left and the second had no place to go - BAM - head on into the Lotus! The SM Miata of Ken Payson got catapulted into the air and did a complete flip coming to rest on its wheels. Richard Cullen said he had a front row seat when the car went airbourne. I came though a few seconds later and it was like a war zone...yellow flags waving, corner workers frantically running and waving their arms....then the red flag quickly displayed.

They called the race with 6 laps left on the board in lieu of the accident. Both drivers were transported to medical and believe were taken to the local medical facility in Sharon, CT. Upon leaving the track we were told that the Lotus Driver David Brand was released with no major injuries (except to his wallet). As far as Ken Payson, I am not sure if he was released but indications are that he had suffered a broken neck or back (not a 100% confirmed report). Our prayers are with both drivers for a speed recovery.

"No Where To Go", things happen fast. Things like this should make HPDE drivers think about cages and full safety harnesses.

Hope everone's OK.

wow.

That's insane. I am hope the injuries are minor. It says a lot for the structure of the cars and the GSRs.

Yea, you get a lot of guys whining about the cage specs in the SCCA GCR right up until something like this happens.

That's unfortunate.

Even if he saw the yellow flag right away, the guy in front sorta left him hanging by swerving at the last second. Not his fault, just everything was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and even the flag man is pretty far off course and not in the line of sight.

I really hate the local cautions for this reason, the race is still going, so nobody wants to lose time, they only let up if they are trying to avoid a wreck.

The yellow flag basically means, "potential death ahead, stay in the throttle"

The yellow flag is very obvious. As a race driver, you should have the situational awareness to catch yellow flags easily.
Anybody can miss one but mose drivers with experience don't. It's usually the novices that miss flags. And if you do, you can be sure you're going to get stopped at tech and have a little talk at the end of the race. In NASA and SCCA you will DQ'ed for passing under a yellow (as it should be).

Very, very few drivers in NASA and SCCA keep their foot in it and you see a lot of hands come up.

HPDE's are a different world, guys miss flags all the time sometimes because they want to run with as few rules as possible. A bunch of them even miss the checkered.

At the last 24 hours of Lemons, one "driver" (no rece license req'd) missed a black flag for 15 laps.

Very unfortunate and quite a scary video. Best wishes for the drivers' recoveries.

Kinda wierd spin. Doesn't look like he was close enough to make contact, but it looks like he dropped a wheel and that upset the car enough to lose it, either that or a downshift or he got on the throttle, which would surprise me since he was in a pinch.

Nice vid setup there, he's got the wide angle and the quality is pretty good without taking forever to download.

What's the deal with the slow Miatas? I assume they weren't up to speed, that's kinda scary coming up on them with that much speed.

An update on Ken Payson (Miata):
Quote:

The following is from Kathy Barnes. I know everyone will be relieved to read this and we all wish Ken a speedy recovery.

Rich Alexander
Chief, F&C
Mohawk Hudson Region

from Kathy:
Quote:

I hate it when my friends are taken away from the track in the
ambulance and we don't find out how they are doing for a long time.
So I am passing this along to you.
Ken is at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. I visited with him
today.

Here are a few messages he would like passed along:

To everybody who helped him: Thank you for the great job. Flaggers,
EMS, the folks who got his car loaded, David & all for getting all
the gear put away, Jerry & all for taking care of the car and getting
Laurie back to central Mass.

He mentioned that when he saw the look on the woman from EMS' face he
decided to do what she told him to do - even if it meant going to the
hospital.
He also appreciates how smoothly Stan drove the ambulance so Ken did
not get car sick.

He is certain that without his head & neck restraint, he would be dead.

Then the conversation migrated to the fishing trip in Alaska that was
supposed to start today, now postponed until the silver salmon are
running next year.

He's sore, will be meeting with the doctors to discuss treatment
plans - but admits that he has learned that following their directions
usually works for the best. He's well enough to post on the board now

From the driver (Ken) himself, well enough to post on the board

lime rock wreak.
Thanks guys for all your support. I cracked my C-2 vertebra, out of hospital and in a neck brace. Emergency staff did everything they were supposed to. It was my fault for getting out of the car. One look at my face and they boarded me. Six weeks expected. Effectively the season is over. Again thanks for your concern it means more than you Know.
Ken
P.S. I have a slightly used back board if any one is intrested.

Time to look into getting a HANS!

Ugh. I figured they'd have different classes or something. So can I sign up with my pickup and be a rolling roadblock?

It would be great if each class could have a separate race. It does happen sometimes, like Spec Miata in N.Calif., which can see 60+ entrys these days. It all depends on the number of cars entered in each class. You can only fit 5 to 7 run groups in a 2 day race. So you have to combine classes with lower entrys with each other to maximize the track usuage. 5 years ago in Norcal, the Formula Fords had their own class/race, 40 entrys. This dropped off and the FFs have to run with the Formula V's and F500s, both rolling roadblocks.
When the economy's good it gets hard to fit all the cars in anyway. 6 or so years ago, Laguna Seca had 529 entrys and they had to turn people away because the pits were totally full.

Miatas, rolling roadblocks, yep, they're slow compared to most on the track. An EVO will always blow away a Miata like the vid.
I'd much rather be in the faster car in a combined class than the slower.
It gets really insane in a NASA endurance race if you're in a Miata and the car on the pole is a Rolex Daytona Prototype and there's 80+ cars on the track.

Geez, just watching Oli blow by me in the esses at the track in his T1 Corvette was interesting enough. I sure as hell don't want Formula Fords of Formula anythings bearing down on me.

They typically separate run groups as much as they can

formula car together - FA, FC, FF, FV

Big bore cars together - GT1, SPO, T2, T2

Small bore together - Spec Miata, ITA, ITB

there's only some much track time available for the club to race though, so the split can only go so far.

Race Groups for San Francisco SCCA this year:
1- FF,CF,FV
2- ITE,ITX,RX7,T2,T3,SSB-C,STO,STU
3- FA,FB,FC,FM,FE,FS,S2,ASR,CSR,DSR
4- GT1,GT2,GT3,GTL,GTA,SP,AS,EP,BSR,T1,NL,N3
5- ITS,ITA,ITB,ITC,ITR,FP,HP
6- Spec Racer Ford
7- Spec Miata

Groups 6 & 7 have enough entrys to have their own race.

It takes a damn good crew to get all these races run within the time limits. 250 cars showed up for the June race at Laguna.
