Can an LT1 car's exhaust be put on an L98 car? Is it a kludge job, or can it be done well?
Most importantly, would it be worth it? I was thinking of looking for an LT1 exhaust off of a parted out car. I guess the options are: LT1 exhaust off of a salvage car. or Custom dual exhaust. or Just a high flow cat. |

It's been done.
Switching from 3 cats to two may not please your local inspection people. |

I'm due for an inspection this year, and then one more after that before I'm exempt. They just do a tail pipe here in Ohio, no physical.
LT1 only has 2 cats? So, going to an LT1 exhaust shouldn't pollute any more, just reconfigure the cats? |

I'd just use a "good" muffler shop......ya know...one the bends and welds things properly....and just make the changes that you want

2 cats will be fine. My 85 only came with one cat, it passes easily.
+1 on the muffler shop. I watched a guy take his C4 to Tijuana and the guy cut a section of 1/4" thick steel pipe to patch the exhaust with. Probably weighed 20 pounds, and the weld looked like popcorn. |

I am not sure you are totally correct on this.. Last time I did mine they just connected to the ALDI and looked for codes, no dyno test However I really think they still do at least randomly look under the car with a mirror.. With my Collector Plates no more inspection for me |

LT1 exhaust is much better than an L98 exhaust and will bolt right up if you get the hangers and all. Shop on CF for a used one. I know the LT1 catback is all stainless, I have one on my '89 right now. Still looks like brand new, and I paid $50 for it.

That's because the LT4 is an ODBII car. The cats are a good comment, but poorly stated. The 1987-91 L98s had 3 cats. Two small pup cats on the down pipes and a big central main cat. The pup cats were designed to light off quicker to provide better cold start emissions. When they went to the LT1 (and LT5), the cats were on the down pipes only, no more pups no more central cat. The main cats were easily 3/4th the size of the old main only and did a bang up job. My 92 is so damned clean, it ain't funny. If you do this, get some long tube headers, high flow cats and the rest is cake. As for a muffler shop doing it... be carefull. If turned in to the EPA, they would get nailed to the wall... $25k fine. |

My point was regardless of dyno test or ALDI check they still might do a visual check with mirror. The thing is that the testers are minimum wage workers with minimal training, that rarely last long...so I truly doubt they would know a LT1 exhaust from a L98 exhaust...thus I am sure Dale could do this upgrade and pass inspection even if they did a visual.. |

I wouldn't worry about a mirror check. They are looking for cats and you are right, they have no idea what they are looking for.
I also suspect they only check if the numbers suck. I missed your point, then... Your car is ODBII, so it gets a ALDL check... the ODBII computer is informed enough to know when everything is ok or not. |
