After working for the five years I have owned my 1985, my emergency brake decided to stop functioning during a stunningly inopportune time (an NCRS Performance Verification).

How hard is it to adjust the emergency brake? Or is it possible that something worse has happened? It still makes the normal ratcheting sound...

Do you have a factory service manual or Haynes? pull rear rotor and check for E=brakes out of adjustment/clean/lube cable unit with penetrating oil/keep lube off shoes. Put rotor on before testing EB.

Not to hard. I had to do mine last yr. I have an 85. The only hard part is getting the jack stands under it. And then reaching under to take up the slack in the equalizer.

It's a 5 on a scale of 10. I remember it being tedious turning it a bazillion times with wrenches. Maybe clean the threads up with PB blaster first.

If it's totally gone, then pull the cover off of the door sill to the left of your seat. There's a pin in there and the E-clips tend to come off of it. This could let the pin release from the ratcheting mechanism. You should be able to see it at least without pulling the seat out.
