Every year my wonderful wife decorates a small "car tree". This year I think she outdid herself - here's a shot taken last night:

Resized Image

Does anybody else on Corvette-Guru have a car tree? By the way, the crazies who want more detail can click here

It is, however, a real indicator of quality - if a Corvette has a Duntov, McClellan, or Hill award a component of those awards is a PV and what you've got is a guarantee of a very nice car where everything actually works...

Ah, there's the rub. The list is unbelievably picky (there are perhaps a hundred items) - you have a long list to go over while parked and then there's a ten mile test drive.

Some examples:

"...Corvettes had dual horns, one high note and one low note ... check operation of the horns in four places around the circumference of the button."

"...the owner will sharply accelerate (full throttle) and demonstrate appropriate power and lack of stumble or misfire."

All the lights have to work. The stereo must function perfectly. There must be no leakage in the HVAC system. There can, of course, be no trouble codes.

With any single problem, you have 15 minutes to fix it. Fail to fix or have another problem and its game over. It's probably the toughest thing in the NCRS.

Lauren is 24 years old today - my wife and I took her out for a short Sunday drive and met with some of the guys for breakfast at the West Chester Diner.

She's running well for a car that's now in it's mid-20s: this late fall weather makes the TPI really happy. She's also looking great...

...next on the agenda is preparing for an attempt at a NCRS Performance Verification (PV) next September. The tough thing about a PV is not only does everything have to work, but everything has to work as the engineers intended: something I'm willing to bet that no C4 attained 100% from the factory.

I think 27 is too high for an 84. 21 is too low for an 85.

Autos will get better city mileage due to the converter unlocking. Manuals usually get better freeway mileage because they're more efficient and let you use engine braking instead of having to hit the brakes as much. But I question the 4+3's efficiency.

My stock '85 4+3 got 24 mpg highway.
Conversion to 6-speed bumped that to 28mpg
Swap from 3.07 to 3.45 dropped it to 25mpg
Cold air intake bumps it up 1-2 mpg in cold weather.

I agree with these observations. I'm getting about 24 mpg in 80% highway driving with my 1985/A4/3.07 and I think that's about all she's got for me. The 1985 computer output is actually fairly close to reality, but I'm really close to stock...

Injectors, injectors, injectors!

Swapped new Ford pink tops in this summer and got about 20% better real (not computer) MPG.

One hundred pictures, mostly from the Eastern portion of the NCRS National Road Tour from Front Royal, VA to St. Charles, MO, but some from the convention itself:

Ah...all we had to do is get a 94% or better on the operations check to receive the Founders Award. With bonus points, we scored a 270 out of 260 - a perfect score (the cigarette lighter decided to work for the only time this year)! We received our Founders Award on Monday evening from Gary Mortimer, one of the original seven folks who started the NCRS.

Aside from the issue with the fuel pump priming yesterday, we have been fine. It has been hot - our still strong GM air conditioning has been fighting hard to keep all that heat from coming through the Plexiglas top. I don't know how the folks with no air conditioning do it...

We now have over 30 Corvettes participating on the tour and at least three more C4s (including a 99% 1986 coupe) have joined the chase. We've got about an even split of old (C4 and below) and new (C5 and above) cars.

We were in Paducah, KY last night. We're in Branson, MO tonight, doing touristy things. Tomorrow we head up to Rolla, MO in the afternoon.

By the way, RollaMo-LT4, at this point our assembly point on Sunday morning will be the Baymont Inn & Suites and we'll be heading out around 8:00 AM.

So I and a few other guys on the road tour went out and took a look - we jiggled the connector a bit. Turned the ignition to on and I can hear the fuel system charge...

...walk away quietly.

Thanks to all for your help - I think I'll be getting a replacement relay anyway.
