Good morning!

Contractor is sick again so I headed into work late again.

Best of luck with that first driving day ...

Didn't know that. My car came with mats that match the carpeting pretty well. They don't have a logo on them. How can I tell if they are original equipment or replacements? Mine 'vert's a '94. If the mats are original, I will replace them with aftermarket for driving around like you do, and save them for judging as well.

Let me see what I can find ...

Saved the original mats while they are still good..

The mats I ordered from Ecklers couple of years ago had the Velcro.

It's all good - just because I want my C4 as original as possible doesn't mean I think that's the right choice for everyone. I just figured I'd mention the differences in case it matters to somebody ...

Short Article On The Service Parts Identification Label

[written for my local NCRS newsletter and - I believe - fairly accurate]

C4 Corner: The Service Parts Identification Label

With the debut of the C4 Corvette in mid-1983, Chevrolet inaugurated a massively more detailed replacement for the body paint and trim plate that had previously identified some of the characteristics of a new Corvette. The Service Parts Identification label (SPIL or SPID) was located in several locations — most were located as specified below, though there do seem to have been some exceptions.

1984 - early 1986; driver side rear storage compartment
late 1986 - 1994; center storage compartment lid
1995 - 1996; passenger side rear storage compartment

Printed by computer at the Bowling Green plant, a Service Parts Identification label will tell the owner or potential owner many things, among them the complete option load-out for the particular Corvette to which it is glued. The SPIL also includes the VIN number, the paint type, the paint code (or codes, if it is a Corvette with two-tone paint), and the trim code. I can tell you that a photo of the Service Parts Identification label was a big influence on my purchase of my particular 1985.

With (it must be confessed) significantly better printing quality, the Service Parts Identification label continued on the C5s and into the C6s (it is now a bit smaller and consistently resides on the glove box door).

I got mine from Ecklers a couple of years ago:

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?pf_id=35863&dept_id=1593

- they're a good color match and they have the velcro. A skilled NCRS judge will flag them as not original because (get this) the rubber nibs on the back are too large.

They were always standard - and they do hold up pretty well: my original set on my 1985 is still presentable enough for judging, though I have another set for driving around.

We have a 1985 coupe and a 2003 'vert.

Same basic specs (350 ci, A4) but the cars could not be more different. We love them both.

At this point, there is no way to do this. I'm having this same issue because my 1985's sheet is fading badly. I'm considering scanning it in, at least to have some kind of record.

If you have to replace the console lid I would definitely keep the old one.

"The Corvette Black Book" by Michael Antonik will give you a good idea of how the cars evolved and what options were available for each model year.

Two other good books are "How to Restore and Modify Your 1968-82 Corvette" by Richard Newton and "Corvette Restoration Guide" by Richard Prince. Both books have sections on what to look for (and what to look out for), when chosing a C3.

Another suggestion, since you live in south Fl, is to go to a couple of shows (I assume they still hold them throughout the "winter" down there), and ask questions of the C3 owners.

Some great suggestions here, especially looking at Newton's book and attending a couple of shows. For example, there's an NCRS Regional meet at Kissimmee this week from the 9th to the 12th and I know there will be C3 folks there who have both perfect show cars and nice drivers.

What does the brake fluid look like? When I first got mine it looked like Guiness and had tiny metal flecks in it.

Rex Ruby and I bled the brakes - it took forever to get the fluid to a normal color. When I drove it home that night the spongy feel was all gone - a huge change.

The first NCRS regional of the year is in Kissimmee, FL this week from the 9th to the 12th. If past is prologue, there will be some nice original C4s there, some local and some 'snowbirds' from up north.

More information is at the Florida Chapter site here:

I wonder who the buyer would be - the block won't be numbers matching, so it won't help any FCR folks. Bogus is right that there are better choices out there for the same amount of cash.

It does make me wonder what else is sitting there, though ...
