[quote]If down the road someday, some back to stock restorer gets hold of my car, the poor bastard has my sympathy! :banghead]

It's funny, values for the 1963-1967 mid-years have gone up so much that you see people trying to restore heavily modified Sting Rays to stock condition. I always think they'd be better off making them into resto-mods ...

Hello, all: this is a kick-off post for the C4 Factory Restoration section.

I'll freely admit that people doing factory restoration on C4s are in the vast minority within the entire C4 community, but we are out there. My story:

I bought my 1985 about four years ago. At first I didn't know what i wanted to do with it - I had purchased it because it was the car I wanted when I was 15. After a while I decided I was going to restore it to the way it was when it was new.

Restoring a C4 is not easy, in part because the restoration suppliers aren't convinced there is a market for C4 restoration parts (don't talk to me about batteries or tires ). Be that as it may, I have managed to take 'Lauren' from about a "22 footer" to about an "8 footer" - and get a National Top Flight along the way earlier this year. i've also made a ton of friends and learned a huge amount about my car and other C4s.

My 1985 isn't the most perfect restoration out there, but I think I can give good advice in this area. So, step up and ask a question - if I don't know the answer I can probably find out ...

I don't feel like I can convey myself properly with the smiley set we've got here. There's some important ones missing, and some are just plain extraneous.

At the very least, the commonly used ones should be on the main page, we don't even have a normal happy face or a lol there.

Who uses these ones? :shaking: :silent:

Why have these ones :thumbleft: , when we've got this better one :thumbright: ?

And well, what does this one mean? That a white dude with an afro approves of your post?

First thing I check out on forum software is the smileys ...

For what it is worth, this is my experience with the MAF. I have an 87 vert. that I installed a Jasper 383 stroker. Ran fine after a few bug killings. Then all of a sudden the engine ran bad (no code) and poured black smoke from the exhaust. Long story short, the MAF malfunctioned. Found it by unplugging sensor. Ordered a new one, installed and been running fine ever since. This was 6 months ago. I have scratched and sniffed to figure out why it did not set a code. Even discussed with my mech. which is very reliable. Hope this info helps.

Hmmm ...

I agree - almost everything I know about my L98 is from reading and re-reading this book.

hm... I would take advantage of time.

To me, a failure that is heat related means something is soon to die. I would start checking the wiring very closely.

I hear you - I think the first thing I'm going to do is disconnect the battery and start checking wiring and cleaning connectors. Ah, the glamour of C4 ownership ...

they can get slow... they can get wacky... they can act weird... all of witch may or may not throw a code. failure would result in a code.

however, check the relays and the wiring to and from the relays, first.

on the pre 1991 C4s, that's a real problem - overall harness durability.

I agree - what I really to do is go over all my wiring with a fine tooth comb. Problem is that I have to do this soon before the weather gets colder and the engine starts behaving again ...

Just joined ...

... I'm one of those crazy guys doing a C4 restoration, though it isn't a full one like some here are doing. We drive our 1985 about 4k miles a year and it's almost at 60k: high mileage for an NCRS-judged C4, much less one that's received a National Top Flight.

The car is not perfect mechanically - it's got some fuel delivery/mixture issues I'm still trying to track down.

By the way, I'm convinced that Andy Bogus moved to California just so he wouldn't have to personally troubleshoot my electrical problems, but the power of the Internet does keep him reasonably close ...
