You didn't provide your plan so this may be premature. How is it going?

I did mine over a long weekend in bursts of activity. I was also able to use my younger, thinner son's help. The only advice that I would add, if you haven't reached the stage yet, is to check for leaks before installing. I used a thin inner tube and clamps to put about 15 lbs of pressure in the system and held the unit under water. I also verified that the method worked when I tested the old core that I replaced. One other thing, I used a photo of the cover provided by Agent86 and it really helped me find the upper, driver's side screw.

If yours is installed and not tested, I'm sure that it will be good. The odds are tremendously in your favor.

I am actually testing the text provided by Jet-Jock. He did his a couple years ago, and I have edited about as much as I intend to on his text, but want to now apply it.

I need to get some extra pictures, so people can better see what is being talked about.

I am also doing a full interior resto, new carpets, insulation, etc.

Ok, back to it! I have a ton of things to do today... ugh...

One thing that will get ya though it everything has to go in upside down, which can also be an advantage, cause the blend door attachment is then on the bottom and easy to get to if need be!!

Ill get some pics up

You may notice also that the heater core sitting up that way means that the coolant should be less likely to sit at the bottom and start eating it.

When I was pulling my dash apart to do a repair on the firewall I was wondering how the hell anyone was supposed to get in there to change that heater core. Major PITA-good luck with that.

Have you finished the core change, Andy?

I used Lani's pdf and thought he did a great job, tho we did chat by phone a couple of times.

Mine went very well, between his instructions and the phone calls. PM me if you need to.

Best,
Bruce

WOW, I can't believe this seems like it's going to be worse than adjusting the windows. Is that pdf from Jet-Jock available for download anywhere or it's one of those email and send deals. I have quite a few servers to make an unlimited download of this if anyone wants to send to me.

I am working with Jet-Jock's document.

The basic idea of Guru is to provide these types of documents to our members at no charge.

As soon as I add some (lots) of pictures, I will be posting it!

Check out the library here: Tech Library

I think I boned myself.

Last night, I plugged everything back together under the dash... and forgot two connectors. One is very large and and has many wires the other had 4 wires. I need to find my electrical manual to determing which is which.

However, I tried to start this morning and nothing... a SYS on the IP... I find the connections, well... not connected. I reattach and still SYS.

Tonite, I get home and start diags. The battery is quite low. I am wondering if the contacts are bad... but it's charging right now. I found one fuse, for the theft system, that looked questionable. I replaced it.

At this point, I am pulling for a bad battery... but expecting a dead CCM. I think I fried it. Damnit. I just don't know how.

the CCM is showing a C41 and H41 error. they mean the same thing - loss of serial data link.

Not good...

Yes, I am a moron.

When I put my dash back together after replacing the heater core I got to sets of connectors switched. I think that there are only two that are possible to plug in to one another. You might check that.
Good Luck!

ooh. I will check that. IF it's the two I am concerned about that could be it. Thanks for the pointer. I am gonna check it right now, infact.

I have disconnected the battery... I am getting a C41/H41 error plus ERR for both the engine controller and the EBCM.

ok. Greg is the MAN!!!!!

Dude, you nailed it.

I had no clue GM could be so stupid to put two sets of identical connectors next to each other like that. It woulda taken me hours to figure this one out.

When I update Lani's document, I am gonna be 100% sure that detail is properly documented.

Sharpie mark it is.

I just got in from reassembling the dash. I have the core in and the structure reassembled. The ducting is all working and the car actually starts... shocking.

The next step is getting the hoses reconnected and then we have heat!

Cant wait to see photos and a write up. I havent needed mine in 8 years here in Hawaii, but, I will in three years, so getting started soon would be a good idea.
Also, replace the electric motor for electric AC/Heater controls. its a cheesy little motor in there.

I have heat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have also figured out something... the heater core is a constant flow type. It adds some coolant to the system (no question) but is constantly runs coolant, which means there is a bit of heat loss in the heater at all times.

I am wondering if the car will now run cooler because it's back in.

Next up is the rest of the interior resto.

I added a number of pictures to Lani's write up... so that will help... and there will be even more of the disassembly.
