I have my amp wired this way without issues. Is that ring terminal long enough that the bolt and battery cable seat flat? I think mine may be on the outside of the terminal. I think this is why I also changed the bolt to a hex.

There are lots of cars out there with side terminals. I'm sure the particular cable and length is corvette specific though with the unique battery position. The starter terminal would also be different than aftermarket stuff.

I don't think the ring terminal is long enough to allow it to seat flat, and I tried it on the outside but it's worse.

I'll proably have to change the 'battery style' screw to a hex bolt and see if that fixes the problem.

Just wanted to check and see if the cable happened to be a special/Corvette only item, thanks all!

Is the positive battery cable (for a 1991 L98) unique to the Corvette? I have a supplemental positive cable ending in a ring washer type connector, which, when I place it under the postive terminal, prevents solid contact.

I am pretty sure this has a lot to do with my battery running down and/or the check gauges light always on.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

That's WAY too high, maybe half that is about right for a STARTING point. C4 'Vettes just don't command the market value.

On my c-4 I have the common turn knob dis-connect switch on the battery negative side which I use when the car is parked in the garage as a safety/fire issue. I was just advised that every time I disconnect the battery the ECM will have to re-learn the system the next time it is driven. Does anyone know how long does it actually take for the ECM to re-program itself when being driven.
I also was advised to place a fused jumper from one side if the dis-connect switch to the other. I was told that this will allow all memory to store but will not allow the car to start. Does this info sound correct
Thanks again
Woody

I have had the 'turn-knob' disconnect on my 1991 for years now and never had a problem. It is needed because I have yet to trace down the source of some electrical draw (it's on my to-do list!).

The ECM relearn takes hardly any time and is not noticeable; I myself wouldn't bother with the jumper though...just my opinion.

Very unlikely it's a fuse, much more likely it's an issue with the vacuum system that controls the hvac or a mechanical issue with the dampers, as previously noted. Usually if it's a vacuum issue you get heat all the time though :-)

From a lot of what I have heard and read, you don't need to use any cleaner, and it could end up doing more harm than good. If anything Seafoam will clean up any gunk in the system.

The primary purpose of the springs is to pop the hood up high enough for the "pecker pin" to clear the "fish mouth". After that the hood struts do the work.
On my 89 I had the primary rod on the drivers side, plus the short helper rod on the passenger side and it would jump up so fast that I removed the short one.
Might want to try a short one in conjuction with primary, I assume yours will have the mounting plates?

Joel

Joel, the springs are performing OK. They are just very old, and the replacement of the springs should be quite simple. Unfortunately, I have not read a thread confirming the simplicity of replacement. It appears there is a locking nut at the base of the assembly, and the
shaft has a slot for assembly adjustment, but the components are 'frozen', making removal seemingly impossible without breaking something.

On the '92, there is only one support/lift strut, and you have to initiate the lift, and then the strut provides lift help.

I can live with the existing situation..... 'tired' springs on the vette, and replacement springs in the shipping box.

What does the FSM show?

Before spending money on the spacers, consider getting 18" rims that fit right. This will open you up to many tire options for many years and will allow for more brake upgrade options.

Just my opinion but I don't foresee any problem in the near future getting 17" tires; selections may be more limited than today but I don't think they will become real hard to find...

Agreed; once a crack starts it will likely only get bigger due to the pretty severe amount of stress placed on the C4 targa tops.

For #1 I'm thinking starter; if it pretty much always starts when it's cold but not hot, that could be a weak starter (double check your battery too just because it's new doesn't necessarily mean it's good.)

Working on the others.

It was flashing on and off when I was very low on gas and after a hard curve or acceleration, intermittently flashing.

I filled up the tank then drove home and haven't checked it since (raining now) but will report back thanks all!

OK, I have searched and saw a few posts that said this light was meant to alert the driver to check the (other) gauges, logical but not...anyhow, would running low on fuel to light the reserve light cause this light to go on? thx all!

Yeah maybe, if they were $25. How many years ago did you buy yours? Rock Auto lists four. $55, $68, $124 and $184. That's without shipping.

Probably 2-3 years ago...thank inflation I guess :-(

The Factory Service Manual has detailed procedures on all that...although my fuel pump passed the test since I could not simulate the temperature conditions in the tank on a hot summer day...

Yep...in fact if it's bad it could cause not only a "hammering" sound (think of your water pipes if you have high pressure, the sound of the pipes banging when opening or closing a faucet) but pressure leak down can also cause a hard start condition as well.

Cheap enough to replace, really doesn't hurt to have it on, though it won't hurt to bypass with a piece of fuel hose.

This can't be, I thought as it is only 2 years old.
I put the mini-vac on the vacuum tube and proceeded to pull fuel out of the regulator housing. The thing failed at the through clamp in the center.
$76 total at Advance Auto. I know tpis has them for less but that's a mail order. This piece is definitely a weak link on the car.

Once I get it started, it runs great.

I wouldn't rule out the fuel pump just yet. I chased a hard warm start for months, eventually the car just flat out died when hot, ran like a champ when cold. Turned out the fuel pump got hot and took a dump..also turns out it's a known issue on a C4...

IMHO, for a stock street driven car I wouldn't bother with the adjustable, just get a good stock replacement. Could cause more problems than are solved by adjusting...

I have a similar issue on the passenger front side of my '91 manifold, I am 99% sure it's a gasket leak at the manifold.

It's barely noticeable, wondering if I should try some of the old Bars stop leak stuff before taking apart the top end, but it isn't a huge deal at the moment.

My guess (of one item) is the fuel pump. It's a known issue, I had similar problems with my '91, replaced the pump and it runs like a dream.

Then again, could be injectors, EGR, or even an ignition component getting hot...but I'd start with the fuel pump.

Slightly LOL geez it was well over a year ago, the whole car was a project when I bought, thank GOD for this site!

Part of what I did on that teardown was replace numerous incorrect or bad (some seemingly burnt) parts, including (but not limited to) the radio receiver, head unit, DERM unit (what a bi*ch THAT was to get out!), broken vents, trim pieces, rewiring, cracked and broken dash parts, and on and on (and on).

Like so many other projects, it started out just fixing the radio...and then...well you know the rest!

I think whoever wrote that part of the manual may have thought that the radio head unit was the receiver! :-)

I too though am almost positive I removed and replaced mine without having to pull the dash pad!

Here's a scary picture for y'all...(not just due to the radio, many other things needed fixin'!)

electric control. just havent had a chance to dig into it. i did spend some time today looking for the vacume line that runs through the fire wall and couldnt find anything that was sucking air. i'll search the forum for the wiring and vacume diagram. thanks for everyone's help as usual.

Here's more or less what you're looking for under the hood, yours may not be in this exact location but the setup is the same, check valve needs to be there and vacuum hoses hooked up right.

As for the air blowing out only the vents; it's most likely a bad vacuum source, there are many messages on the subject here if you do a search or two, usually a pretty easy fix.

Unless you're not lucky and it's the electronic controller, that's not so easy or cheap...do you have the manual or electronic climate controls?

Ok, I am sure everyone here knows about this and I am changing my oil next week due to a fuel problem.....Haha. Anyway, I used Royal purple last time and it just caught by eye once again. Amsoil. Duh! It's expensive true at 17 dollars a quart but it seems pretty good and I am going to give it a try just for kicks and giggles. Now their filter, I just did a comparision against wix and a few other brands including mobil1 filters and the Amsoil filter appears to be better than all of them....Expensive true but I like the way it looks and the way it's designed seems very well thought out.

I thought I would *share* my opinion on the matter as I think filters are a top priority and I used FRAM ALONG TIME AGO. Never again. I got a wix on there now but I might call Amsoil and talk to there service hotline.

And in case anyone wants to use the old excuse, don't use synthetic or it will make your motor leak. Thats FALSE! I changed to synthetic mobil 1 a few years back and nothing ill came of it concerning leaks. Yea, it was more expensive but that is irrelevant in this thread. Better to be safe than sorry...[/quote

Thanks for the update; however, IMHO switching to synthetic oil CAN (not necessarily WILL) cause some oil seepage, but only in high mileage and/or "loose" engines.

Words of wisdom, do not make the same mistake I did and try to cheap out on the weatherstripping. You will end up doing a nasty job twice and have leaks.

Spend the $ and get the good stuff from wilcox.

In fact right now they have a sale check this out;

Good luck

I've used K&N in ALL my cars for more than 10 years now, NEVER had a problem. Just keep them clean and DON'T over oil.

Hi,
I have two questions I am hoping someone can help with.

First does anyone know of any online instructions for removal and installation of the steering wheel on a 1992 C4?

Second question is does anyone know of a good steering wheel restoration service? Really what I would like is someone who could could make the steering wheel slightly thicker and custom wrap and stitch. If that's not available restoring to original but I'd prefer to match it to the new seat stitching.

Thanks
Jim

Make sure you wait at least 30 minutes or more after you remove the air bag fuse before you attempt to work on the air bag. There may be a residual charge in the system which could trigger the air bag. Even better, disconnect the battery for 30 more minutes. You don't want to take a chance of the bag deploying. After that it's not a bad job.

That range of injector resistance is not good, probably should replace them; check out the vendor forums and past posts for Jon @ FIC for the best injectors and deal.

The strainer on the fuel pump pickup is just a press fit of the metal cap to the bottom, it may take a little coercing but then it should pop right off.

Update on my issue; replacement fuel pump etc. resolved my issue, seems to be running really good now.
