How is the car running? Any headway on the a/c overheating problem? Even with the new trans cooler/fan I'm still experiencing the high temps, although they seem more stable now.

Hi Matt, Funny you should ask. So far things seem to be a little better after my going through and changing out the cooling system, back to the stock new radiator, a 180 hi flow Robert Shaw thermostat, new fluids (distilled water + super cool), etc. Did I mention how I spent a couple of thousand with a corvette specialist shop to resolve some of my issues but didn't. When I decided to take this problem on myself, within 3 months of them working on my car I found: the shop never changed the thermostat which they charged me for when they replaced the water pump (which was showing signs of leaking) and "flushed out the system" - what a crock of BS, never happened or more correctly wasn't done well. When I pulled out the 3 core radiator (which doesn't have a drain plug in it - WTF) the goop that came out of it was just that - about a gallon of thick crap that literally came out of the radiator in big globs - unbelievable. I think I'm just tired of what seems to be throwing money at others to solve my problems and then finding out they really don't do what I'm paying for. You cannot believe how grateful I am for this site and all the help and information that is available here .

Anyway, the car is running really well right now, certainly more stable. I've taken it into the mountains, pretty heavy pull going up but no big temp problems. A few days ago I spent couple of hours in heavy traffic and didn't have any big issues, however; I did turn off the a/c at 215 degrees in stop and go traffic a couple of times, and this was with the outside temp around 100 degrees. Before this would be a killer heat situation - engine temps pushing 240+ . Presently I'm relooking at possibly adding one of Greg Carroll's water/alcohol injection systems for further help. I still may have to replace the headers or wrap them to get some more heat out of there.

I have been curious about how you're doing with heat. Wondering how the transmission cooler you installed is affecting your temps. It's setting exactly where my big intercooler sits, just a couple of inches from the front of the radiator. Certainly cuts down the air flow, and a low speeds you know what's happening on these bottom feeders - temps go up. You eliminated the front auxiliary fan which I’m sure is also affecting you. These temp thing are challenging .

Have you tried the vette2vette site? I've picked up a few different little items from them for my 89. Most recently those damn little aluminum screws from the throttle position sensor, which I was unable to find anywhere else . You might check in with Jason, his email is vette2vette@mchsi.com. Luck to ya !

The main cats just don't hold up. You are in NJ, they mandate the "CA standard" cat. If so, don't complain about the cost, it's a much better can than the basic replacement. It will last a long time... it has to meet OBDII durability standards. It might be more expensive, but it will 3 or 4 times longer.

Maybe it's just me :-) but I'm confused

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/weba ... teel-magnaflow_22317388-p

Says only not for sale in CA, nothing about NJ. Most other sites list this and other cats (e.g. Catco) as being "49 state legal".

Is this cat not legal in NJ? or is it just not as good?

One more ? do I need to worry about the pre-cats or if I replace only the main should that do the (emissions) trick?

Thanks all!

Another that you might want to look at is Random Technology. They offer a pretty nice product that performs well. When I did the change over on my car and went to a dual exhaust system I used their small bullet cats and they've held up well. Just a thought for you .

There is a dyno involved, and a low speed test and a marginally higher speed test. 15 and 25mph, IIRC...

Now, there is one thing you are not talking about. The cats. Or, more than likely, the main cat.

Is NJ doing a visual or just a sniff test?

If it's just the sniff, I would replace the front y-pipe with one that has no cats, then, replace the single main cat with a new main cat.

When you get that close with the numbers, the cat is more than likely dead or dying.

Our Cherokee did that last year. It was in good tune, for sure, but it also wasn't passing. Threw on a new magnaflow cat and the numbers crashed down to earth. I mean CRASHED. I don't remember the specifics, but HC's went from failing at 500 or 600 to passing with under 50.

If you have the $$, try to retrofit an LT1 style system. That would allow for dual cats and dual exhaust and will add about 30hp to the thing.

If you buy a cat, get one that meets CA OBDII standards. They are more expensive, but they also last much much longer.

I agree with Andy on this, take a close look at your cat. I've had the pleasure of replacing that single cat multiple times to pass Colorado's sniffing tests. Recently I converted the system to two individual small cats, no y-pipes, and have had no problems since. I'm on my 4th year with this set-up, yesterday I went through emissions testing and passed with flying colors, examples: HC GPM reading O.6832 (Limit 2.0000), CO GMP reading 4.9566 (Limit 20.0000), NOx GPM reading 1.0589 (Limit 4.0000).

What do you have? Are you happy? What's the total price point of all three combined?

2 phone lines and DSL Xtreme 6.0 + $144.64

Total Sat/Ph/Int = $221.07

I've been with the same companies for many, many moons. This is how I'm treated. Cellphones (2) are another $80 a month with Boost Mobile.

Just comparing apples to oranges. My wife wants to keep the telephone hard lines. We still have a fax hooked to one (in the office with the internet) and the other phone has been our home phone number for 30 years now. Friends and family still call on that one. Comcast has a TV/Internet bundle but it ain't cheap. Being the frugal guru, my home computer has to be about 9 years old now and hard wired too. Just want to hear some options from people other than the paid performers on TV.

I forgot to mention yesterday you shouldn't worry about having to change any telephone numbers if you decide to move to another carrier. With number portability (basically it means you "own" the telephone numbers that you have) transferring to another carrier is not difficult. Sometimes the company you're leaving will try to hold up things by not readily transferring your numbers to the new carrier but its been a while since I've heard of that happening. So, if you choose to pick another communications company you can still keep those numbers that you've had for so many years. A condition that would supersede this rule is if you move into an area with a different area code (land lines only). Won't effect mobile service but will land lines.

I guess I'm kind of on the opposite side on a lot of this. Cable, Comcast, is primary land supplier with 2 phone lines (unlimited long distance, lots of services on line one, line two POTS) HD package with HS Internet and multiple "premium" channels (including HBO, Showtime, Stars and Encore channels, etc.) for about $200 per month. Mobile, 2 numbers with unlimited services for data and voice, T-Mobile, averages ~ $95 per month.

Been with Comcast and T-Mobile for over 10 yr. No real complaints with either service.

What Tom said.

I just used oil based tinted on my red wood railing last year. Used Olympia Maximum.

Be careful, read the can, there's a lot of acrylic stuff being sold now (I don't like it, it doesn't soak in).

I sprayed mine but I could pull off 6 ft. sections easily and spray them away from the deck.

If you decide to hand apply, I'd recommend a staining pad (cloth covered foam), it's 3x faster than trying to use a brush.

I would suggest the Sikkens Cetol Deck Finish which is a really good oil based product - however it gives more of a Chris Craft boat type finish, not a weathered look. Not the easiest product to use but it really leaves the deck looking good.

I agree with you the base price sure isn't bad. Your thoughs are exactly to my point – the new C7 will in all likelihood follow the same path as other models. First buyers will probably be paying a premium which seems to be more of a "just because we can" by the dealers. Few years down the road, they’ll be wheeling and dealing.

Here in the mile high city things are once again looking good, nice weather for the week-end - well temps in the 50's are better than the 20's and no snow predicted until Monday, I wonder if we'll make it. Maybe spring is coming. Got a big birthday for the grandson today he's turning - 18

That Killian's Red is pretty good, hope your lady liked it .

Thanks for the car compliment, actually mine is an '89 with the full GC4 limited edition Greenwood . This was the limited edition serialized body kit that Greenwood came out with for the C4. It's fairly complete and included a new front spoiler w/ lights, windshield and wheelwell fairings, side rockers and lower door caps, hood louvers, rear quarters w/ tunnel and strakes and the rear wing, etc., etc.

I haven't put on the mirrors (fairly expensive however they claim to reduce turbulence along the side window) or the high rise hood which I may add later. Most of the parts have my car's VIN number glassed on to them for registration and coordination with the limited edition Greenwood serial numbers assigned to each part.

Anyway Welcome aboard, I know you'll have a great time here. This is an incredibly great site

Agree with this, I'm running a similar setup now. Depending on your needs you may want to also consider a cloud back-up.

Mostly looking to clean up a few minor spots, no big chips, and was wondering about alternatives to those little jars with the nail polish brush.

Read the story... but I suspect the $71k is for a fully loaded Stingray... Not the base model.

try this again

I recently read about Rick Hendrick paying something like $1.1 Million for the first one off the line. Thats some serious bucks

Yup. It does sound like it's about the explode.

Tell your passengers it's a race transmission and it's supposed to do that.

Mine is only noisy with the clutch engaged at idle. It gets loud when the fluid warms up. I have to push the clutch in to place an order at a drive thru window if that gives you an idea.

Exactly At idle is when you notice it and you will

And what if you run it at 140F forever? When is it too cold?

When I talked to Dana last week he said 160-180* is perfect and will make the trans last a very long time.

Do you think you'll have any new engine heat issues with the cooler mounted up front? I've been working on keeping my temps down with an intercooler mounted similarly.

i have a fidanza in both my zr1s .the only difference you seem to get from the solid flywheel is gear noise at idle . there shouldn't be any vibration change ,unless the flywheel isn't the same balance as the original .the benefit is you get a lot better acceleration with the lighter flywheel .

Completely agree. In my case the stock duel mass was eliminated when my engine was rebuild and I do get a fairly significant gear noise at idle, it's noticeable, no doubt about it.

Well that's something, good reason I'd say. Not so sure this event is still going, so you may have a real one of a kind, kind of thing there

One of the scariest races I've ever run, made Pike's Peak (which I also did on 2 wheels) look like a glass smooth freeway.[/quote]

You still riding? I suspect you must have had an interesting experience, back in the early 70's Pike's Peak wasn't in what you might call good of condition as I recall.
