I prefer custom cams aswell opposed to off the shelf stuff.
I've been using Joey @ www.americancustom.cam
for 30 yrs, never got a bad cam... I just tell him what I am working on , give him the specs. I want and that's it! Then again I do give my customers other cam options too

I hope this is on topic, so here it goes :
I started my shop in 1979 by buying wat I call beater cars for real cheap, do minor repairs then turn them 4 a profit.
TODAY I seek out sedans , always domestic cars, pic them up for $200- $ 500. I'm gettin, a nice return on them. Little extra side money never hurts. Open for anything that makes a coin

Well I guess alls well that ends well
My sister picked up a 2000 Mustang last night for only 1,800. In mint condition ! Much newer car and $$ money ahead, it'safer for her children to ride in. I shoulda had more faith in my sister.

Oh yea, agreed.
I do a build sheet on every motor I build. Tolerances need to be matching or as close to that as possible.

It's extremely important on that yellow car in my avatar where you're running a "stock spec" low horsepower motor. Everything's important in that engine because you're looking for tenths of HP increases. Just profiling the rocker arms to go to max lift without going illegal can take a full day.

I agree Bill... hard to make people believe how much time it takes, we kinda gotta forget its an "Engine" , It is a machining project/assemmbly where quality control is no different than manufacturing, or re-manufacturing anything else.

Have your machinest mic. everything out n go from there.
The main thing is getting all tolerances in specs. for desired application, after machine work pre-assy to check #'s, make corrections, then if all cool final assy.
As far as damaged/worn parts, discard them , unless u r bandaiding things, jus mho
I am happy to help any time if u have questions.

There are many factors involved here.... Basic rule of thumb is .001 thousands of oil clearance per vertical journal diameter.
Then I like to see 12pds of oil pressure per every thousand rpm's.
For example, In an endurance racing engine running 7k at all times, at , full throttle 85pds of oil press. makes me happy, provided the oil gets back to the pan.... In other words 85pds at full throttle constantly, and at idle your o/p will drop to bout half that...
In an application like this I run Hi volume modified pumps.
all depends on watcha doin

In closing if you dont know your oil clearances, you are kinda in the dark :/ IMHO.

Regardless the more oil capacity you have and controlled oil temp. you have should be your objective.

The SBC oiling system will will perfectly fine with a stock oil pump for MOST applications, provided that your OIL CLEARANCES are within specs imho. I agree with Andy bigger capacity pan is good too
