Here in NC, not many of the tracks enforce the rules. There's no tech inspection or anything where we normally run. Most places here, you can run 9's with the top down and your hair on fire if you want.

Hell yeah! That's how we roll down here...

Congrats on the new best, Josh! I think there's more in it yet...

My $.02 on launching a C4 is to stick with the dual mass flywheel as long as you can. In my opinion it actually helps launch the car rather than hurting it. After consistent 1.7s on the motor and 1.5s on the bottle and never so much as a squeak from the rear in my '96 (including some wheels up launches), I'm convinced that sprung flywheel is key. Traction was never really an issue since the tires were not getting whacked by the clutch hit, including 4,000rpm launches on the bottle making 550rwtq.

Of course, a dual mass will only really work with the stock motor.

I hadn't even paid attention to my reaction time on that pass until Josh pointed it out today from the video. .501 Near perfect light.

DA was good. +400 for most of the day and +200 towards the end. When I first checked at 9am before heading to the track, the DA was -1,500. I wish it had stayed that way...

Brought the car out of the garage for the first time yesterday in about a month. Swapped out the tires and loaded it directly on the trailer and took it to a track day rented by a local site Horsepower Junkies. There were some great cars there and I spent most of my time just watching.

I made 2 passes the whole day. First pass as a 10.86 @ 127.84 with a 1.59 60 foot time and a 6.93 @ 103 in the 1/8 mile. The second pass was a 10.83 at 128.13 with a 1.58 60 and a 6.97 at 100.65 in the 1/8. The second pass felt really good and I thought it would be a new best, but the bottle was a little too cold and bottle pressure was down.

Here's a video of the second pass with a naaasty burnout for the camera
YouTube

Fun outing and the car performed flawlessly again and was the only C4 out of 200+ cars...representing the C4 generation!

Josh, you're going to regret it long term if you sell your car before you've seen it to its full potential. You need to get it dialed in and hit it with a 200 shot and run a 10.50. Then the 300 pills and run a 9.90. You won't be burned out on it then!

I've had the C5 bug lately, but I'd probably hate myself if I got rid of the C4.

Dude, you just need an opti

Seriously, you just need to get some more track time with it and better air. Next time, we'll bust out the trailer too so you won't worry too much about carnage. With your power, low 11's are in the car, we just need to dial it in.

Did you datalog any passes?

I like the results...you picked up on both hp and torque. No wonder you could feel it in the seat of the pants when you first drove it. I'd say the AFRs are definitely worth the coin.

BTW, when do I get to drive it?

Got it fixed. Found a new traction control module on eBay for $25, plugged it up and I'm good to go. Gotta love cheap C4 parts!

To me, the issue is purely mechanical. You should be able to disconnect the electrics and it should run fine.

** your throttle cable does work fine when the car is off & I can't comprehend that GM didn't make it a failsafe system.

No, it doesn't work that way. It is not a direct linkage between the pedal and the throttle for some reason. The ASR unit controls the linkage. Right now I can physically press the gas pedal in the car even though it is stiff, but the throttle does not open. I took the cover off the unit and it is not a direct connection. The car will start fine, just no throttle.

Long story, but I managed to fry my ASR/traction control unit today. It had something to do with me bolting the bracket down on top of the hot wire for my electric water pump. Not cool, especially considering I can't drive the car now.

Now I'd like to figure out how to get rid of the traction control unit altogether. I think it would look cleaner under the hood without it and I don't need it. Unfortunately, the cruise control and throttle cable are tied into the unit. I'm sure someone else has done this. Would it work if I got a throttle linkage assembly off of a pre-traction control car?

Anybody done this already?

Thanks guys!

That is exactly what I was going for when I put the car together. I will never bracket race it or anything, just wanted to keep it all stock looking and run fast, and even faster at the flip of a switch. To date the car is still 100% bone stock appearing on the outside except for stock LT1 exhaust tips instead of L98 tips, and the drag radials. Inside it is stock appearing except for the stereo and rear speakers and the bottle. Under the hood, different story!

Very cool! I like stock looking sleepers. I'm surprised the Dana 33 is holding up.

Here's the easy way to do it. Click on the link below; choose the track, date, & time of the pass, and voilĂ ... you now have the DA. It may not be as accurate as having your own weather station, but it's a lot easier.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the best driver out there, but with the weight advantage and the theoretical power advantage I'm pretty sure even an average driver like me can put the beats on Dan's car. If not, I'll just spray more nitrous until I do!

Be careful stickin' that chest out stick boy, my friend with the '98 Cobra running 17 lbs boost and water/meth did the same thing. Alot can be said for a properly stalled auto and a car that dead hooks on every launch.

And yes, per your request, I'll buy and send you a pink sharpie to use.

This should be interesting, but I think Josh might have your number. I ran a 10.75 at 128 in bad air on a stock bottom end/stock heads LT4 with a hotcam, ET Streets, 150 shot, and a Centerforce clutch with Josh filming the run at the same track he runs at. With his new set up, Josh should be at least 3 to 4 tenths faster than that on a 150 shot. I suspect with a 250 shot he would see low 10's.

The only way to tell for sure is to get it to the track!

So when are you buying that new Dart block? I bet you would love to build a 427 LTx.

You're right. I'm going to build something so I can keep up with you built motor guys. I'm probably going to drop some AFRs on the stock bottom end first to see how much more I can wring out of it.

Mine is about 11 to 1, which is a little on the rich side, but better than lean. Here's a link to the dyno graph.

Good advice. That's what Josh and I were thinking, but it's good to hear somebody else say it. I can't figure out any other reason why I would see up to 10 degrees of knock and within 200 rpm it is completely gone even when the timing comes right back. I'm going to look for possible harmonics.

One other possibility that we considered is the progressive controller is pulsing the solenoids. I have it set to a .4 second ramp. I'm wondering if the pulsing solenoids are somehow being picked up as knock.

Any other ideas/suggestions out there?

Gurus...help. I can't figure out why I am seeing knock at certain rpms. The link to my datalog is below. I started out with the bottle coming on at 3,000rpm and then changed it to 3,500 rpm later in this scan. This is with 150 shot jets on a stock(tuned) LT4 with a hotcam. I had the car on a dyno yesterday and it made 498/547 with the A/F being pretty rich.

I have a FJO Progressive Controller bringing the nitrous on at 30% and ramping to 100% over .4 sec. With 100 shot jets I don't see any knock.

What's up with this...help please??

http://www.scandepot.net/viewscan.php?pk=5142

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Josh is going to lay down some mad times with that setup. Can't wait to get down to the track after you get everything installed. Just don't go faster than 11.65 and I won't have to spend a bunch of money. I suspect I need to start saving my pennies!

Yes...I have already retained Josh as my C4 clutch consultant. I'm curious what everyone else has had success with.

At this point I'm leaning towards a Centerforce, but am open to other options. I'm not crazy about the noise factor of a single mass flywheel, but I guess that's what comes with making big power.

Anybody else had success with a dual mass and hardened disk?

Time for a clutch. My stock clutch is still good, but won't hold when the bottle is on. What is the best clutch for a ZF that combines drivabilty, quietness, and performance? I'm not interested in something that has massive clamping force and immediately breaks the rear. I need something that will protect the Dana 44 and hold 500rwhp. Do I need to go away from the dual mass or can I keep it?

Thanks...

New shocks...KYB

Took the stock 85,000 mile Bilsteins off this weekend and put on some KYBs. The car had seemed loose and a bit sloppy on the handling since I've had it, especially compared to my previous '90 model with the Z51(I think) handling package. Handling is not my big thing though...I like going in a straight line 1/4 mile at a time!

The original Bilsteins looked fine and compressed with same amount of pressure across all 4 shocks, so I wasn't expecting much of an improvement with the KYBs, however the KYBs took a lot more pressure to compress  Wow...the KYBs are much better. The car rides, handles, and drives so much better now.

KYB's seem to be a good cost effective replacement. Josh is running them on his car and there are some other guys who swear by them. Carquest has them.

I say we throw the McLeod back in and see if we can break them motha's. I know you told me, but how much were they again? If you have good luck with 'em, I might invest in a set.

Pick up an OBDI computer for $100 bucks, get Tunercat for $35 (I think) and I'll e-mail my hotcam tune to you for free You will definitely need to get it tuned after the hotcam or it will drive like crap.

I had a problem with my OBDII computer breaking up over 6,000 rpms. I was told by my tuner that it "couldn't keep up". Sure enough, the car was fine after throwing in an OBDI computer. It could be that I have a problem with my OBDII computer. However, I've heard of several more people having that same issue with the 96 computer. Plus with OBDI, you get no stupid codes every 10 minutes and TunerCat is cheap.

Oh yeah...first post on C4guru
