I dyno'd the car today with the AFR heads. It made 414 RWHP and 396 RWTQ. Here's the chart with the AFR heads in red and the TFS heads in blue:

Resized Image

The AFR heads made more power everywhere in the RPM band, and 25 more RWHP at peak. Draw your own conclusions as to the value of the heads, but I'm pretty pleased with the results.

I think we all thought the AFR heads would make more power, but here's the results. Same dyno, same car, as close as I could make the tests.

Tuning didn't change very much. The AFR heads seemed more tolerant of timing and fuel changes without swings in power. For example, I leaned it out all the way to 14.0 and didn't pick up any power. I also ran the timing all the way to 38 degrees without knock, but it didn't make any more power there than it did at 32 degrees. Right now, it is about 13.5:1 (measured at the tail pipe) and 32 degrees of timing. There was less than 1 RWHP difference between this tune and 14.0:1 and 38 degrees of timing.

All in all, both heads performed admirably. The AFR is clearly the winner on power production, and with the cost of the mods to the TFS heads the AFR heads also won in the dollar per HP category.

Thanks for all the forum support.

Whoaaa!!! Tony is going to like those results. Thank you Josh for putting the time and effort into this project. It is nice to see an unbiased report. I can't wait to get my project together with the AFR 195 comp heads.

I know you are pleased. JSUP will be sad.

Thanks for the results and both heads on the same page, graphed together. By the looks of this I'm gonna need a second stage, or a pink marker.

Most important thing of all this is, I want to take a ride in your unit and I want you to take a ride in mine. It will be awesome to feel all that power in a stick car. Autos do help make up for overweight or underpowered but they don't give you the feel of a clutch in every gear all the way through from start to finish.

I like the results...you picked up on both hp and torque. No wonder you could feel it in the seat of the pants when you first drove it. I'd say the AFRs are definitely worth the coin.

BTW, when do I get to drive it?

I'm very impressed. I assumed the AFRs would perform very well but those numbers are a huge improvement. Congrats on the final result.

Josh,

Thanks for doing all you have done in an effort to provide us with quality data to compare. Thorough A-B testing and eliminating variables always makes these types of things far more challenging.

Personally, while Im obviously thrilled with the HP gain, Im more impressed with the immediate and substantial gap in torque thru out the entire power curve but especially in the middle where there are fat gains in all the real world RPM range most of us take more advantage of. That's power you can feel and appreciate just driving it "normal" every day and not having to delve much deeper into the higher RPM range to appreciate and experience the difference. Of course in theory, thats where an efficient higher flowing smaller runner shines and this curve is the perfect testimony to that fact.

Looking forward to the track results....Im sure Beach Bum is inputing the difference into his simulator right now saving you a trip to the track and the admission fee....LOL

My guess is a couple of tenths and a couple of MPH but I wouldn't fall over if it was a bit more because of the gains in average power. Also, Im thinking the track wont nearly have the same D/A in the August heat so we will have to correct it back to the same D/A you ran the other combo in assuming you have that data. Thats the problem with track comparisons....weather and track prep can skew results in such a huge way.

Good stuff...

Cheers,
Tony

Not to mention how his left and right feet are going to have their work cut out for them trying to hook all that extra torque to the pavement. Taking advantage of the extra power right off the line will likely give impressive gains in the ET.

Today has been better weather conditions than it was when I ran last time. However, I will post weather data so we can obtain DA and corrected times.

The tires I run shouldn't have a problem hooking the power, even on a poorly prepped track. The 60 will tell the story there.

I am heading to Kinston Dragway this Saturday. Wish me luck!

Wow... I never would have guessed that big of a spread on the application. I figured maybe half of that difference. 25 rwhp is somewhere around 30-35 HP at the flywheel.... that is probably worth a solid 2 mph at the track and maybe a hair more.... I think in good air, you're going to be hitting up towards that 125 mph number on motor alone. Thats pretty stout....Congrats on the new found power !

Good show Josh !

Lol, for the price you paid for the heads, even with the shipping, you'll make more HP per dollar.
