Cheers Bill

Hate to ask - what is an FSM? I'm a tad removed from the core of Vette owners out here in not so sunny england - so find the only way left to learn is the hard way and by asking stupid questions (was taught a long time ago and still believe there are no stupid questions - only stupid answers) - never had one from any of you guys !!

Can not thank you enough for your super fast and detailed response - my Aston Martin mate is coming by in a couple of hours - I figure he will have no problems given your great description of what is required (many thanks) - he tells me a lot of vette parts/wiring ended up in the db9 etc so lucky for me he loves to work on the car (and for free beer!)

thanks bill

Dear All

Sorry if this should be posted in a different section - I was not sure if it fit this criteria "Where questions about Factory Originality can be asked and answered!"

In essence I have tracked down replacement trim for the rear area of my 92 - the main tricky bit for me is the hydraulic arms which go through one of the pieces of replacement trim. I am hoping the arms will un-hook rather than having to be un-screwed from the body. Not wanting to break anything (as being in the UK leaves me very short on replacement parts - lets be honest ... there are none) I hoped I could ask you guys for your insights on this - thanks

Also I have a replacement rear curtain - I have tripped the trim back to where I can see where it is mounted on both sides - but it will not budge (I noticed the replacement curtain extends up and down but even when I try to nudge the existing curtain up or down it does not come loose) again any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Lastly I had to source some rear parts that were not the colour of the interior (ie the plastic caps that fit over the roof restraints just behind each seat) my car has a light grey interior but the caps I sourced were beige - so I tried my best to match the light grey paint but it is not right (looks better than the originals as they were broken and better than beige ...... but just not quite right) anyone know of gm aerosol paints that do match the 92 grey interior exactly - just one of those things which over time will drive me mad!!!

Thanks all

Many many thanks gents - you guys always come through - I plan to order the mentioned Hawk hps pads - My pal is a head mechanic at Aston Martin whom brags he can swam them in his sleep - will only cost me beer for his time. I will ensure he measures the mm and brushes the rotars if still fit

cheers all !!

Cheers for that .... very funny ...... just not what I needed to think - even for a second - good one though !!!

Man - this "sell the Vette now... you will kill your neighbour, shoot the wife, kick the dog.." sounds like your playin a country music song backwards!!! lol

Well this is some welcome news - Also I am back in Canada in 3 weeks time so my treasure hunt continues - had the car for nearly a year now and is now nearly fully restored (interior trim, carpets, radio, speakers, ECM ... too long to list but so worth it !!) and not an easy job while spending 6 months of the years in the UK

Thanks again for all your time

Wow - thanks for the fast response

OK - had a look in the center console - definately have the JL9 = STD Brakes. Bogus kindly wrote

"I am not a fan of cheap drilled rotors. Good drilled rotors have the holes cast in them, they are fairly ok. The problem is that cheap drilled rotors are drilled, which leads to stress fractures around the holes."

Sounds like the ones I am looking at are crap - to tell you the truth I think the existing rotors are OK - just the pads need replacing (hearing a slight squeek in the front left when brakes are not applied - hope it is the pads early warning that it is in need of replacement) So if I did get the rotors and pads for $200 but only used the pads (if thats all it needs) - I have not seen pads alone for less than this - really appreciate any advise here - if my rotors are OK and better than those I am looking at then thanks again - I do appreciate your time and advise

cheers

Dear all

My 92's front vent fan has started to rumble as of late - when set above 3-4 it begins to growl - on 9 it rivals the radio - I suspect I need to source a replacement FAN - is there just one? would one of you fine folks know what it is called (will aid in sourcing one) and lastly are they a bugger to fit (I am in the UK and have linmited access to vette savvy mechanics)

many thanks

Dear All

I am writing from the UK and trying to track down some brake pads (and discs if price is right) I have seen sets on ebay for between 200-250 bucks (this includes pads and disks) for my year except there seems to be 2 different types - here is an example of what I mean

- Chevy Corvette HD C4 88-96 (F&R) Brake Disc Rotors Pads

OR

- Chevy Corvette C4 88-95 F&R Drill Slot Brake Rotors Pad

The only bit that stands out to me is the HD in the top line. My girl is a 92 (bog standard LT1 I believe). I am not sure if there were any upgrade packages off the line. Is there an easy way to find out what sort of brakes I need to replace her tired feet with?

Warm regards and many thanks

I would guess the instrument cluster or ECM is picking up some interference from the ignition. Does the MPG still read normal? Does it say zero instantaneous while in park?

Correct, the signal is fed to the ECM and the FX3 directly from the VSS. After it hits the ECM, it goes to the CCM/Radio/Cruise control module. I think what you are going to find is the ECM is the culprit.

Wow - this is very specific guys (many thanks) and I think this trail could lead to the fault. Do you guys know which of the 4 plugs in the back of the ECM that the speedo signal would pass through - you kindly wrote

"the signal is fed to the ECM and the FX3 directly from the VSS. After it hits the ECM, it goes to the CCM/Radio/Cruise control module."

I am beginning to suspect the new plug which was re-attached to the wiring harness - this plug replacement could be it (the other 3 plugsd were not effected)

Dear All

Thanks so much for your time on this and sorry for not getting back sooner (having Christmas in Toronto has put me thousands of miles away from the car) I am back in the UK next week and will be following this up then - I just wanted to purchase any parts I MAY need before my return (as getting parts out there - let alone finding someone qualified to work on Vette's).

PS - when the car is put back into park it does show 0 for a second then continues to show bogus speeds when at a complete stand-still - as soon as I get over 5-10 mph it shows completely normal ???????

Just a thought - the ECM was replaced with a new unit about a year ago (when I got the car it was a non-starter - the ECM looked like it had touched the sun (one of the 4 plugs was melted into the unit)

So the ECM was replaced with a new unit (purchased in Canada and had a new chip sent up from Detroit after it had been programmed to my cars VIN number etc). Also one of the four cable plugs had to be completely cut off and replaced with a new one (each wire reconnected to the harness etc). All seemed to go OK as the car now runs fine (except for the speedo)

So sounds to me like when they reconnected the cable head to the harness they may have shorted something that is causing the corrupt speedo display.

Is there an easy way to trouble shoot this (bearing in mind I am in the UK and there are no real Vette shops there) Would connecting up a different speedo at least show by triangulation which is the failure point (by this mean is a replacement speedo shows the same then we can safely say it is the ECM/wiring ???)

Would it make any sense to take a VSS unit with me??

I have a great guy here in Toronto whom works on my Vette here - I am sure I can get any parts I need from him.

Really fellas - thanks for your time - as always greatly appreciated.

Dear all

Merry Christmas and happy new year to all

I have a question I hope you folks may be able to advise me on - this is my speedometer in my 92 shows 15+mph when I am in park. This has never bothered me too much as it sorts itself as soon as the car starts moving. However, I recently had the Opti-Spark replaced and now when I am idling in park the speedometer shows 150-250 mph ..... what's making this much worse is that it is ticking up miles on the odometer as well - I am loosing value as she warms up (250 mph ... if only !)

I posted something briefly a few months back when I was last in the UK - sorry if I am repeating myself but I could not find it when I went to search for it today - so thought I would post this again (sorry for any inconvenience). I believe I recall a suggestion it could be the ECC (or something) not the ECM or main computer but rather a secondary system or sorts. I am currently in Toronto Canada so getting parts I might need are cheap and easy enough for me - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Sorry for not posting the resolution sooner

Good news ... even though an expensive road to get here (replaced opti-spark, 2nd alternator and now plugs cables as well) - turns out it was the spark plug wires - when replaced now starts every time in the rain - just wanted you all to know and to thank you for all your time

Thanks so much guys - I really appreciate all your time

Quick Question - I would think (and please correct me if I am wrong) that if I were to go with bigger than the factory size (ie 275/40/17) tires that there could be some sacrifice in performance handling (won't lie to you .... I look for and luv winding roads and sharp corners - that feeling of being on rails is awesome and the main reason I have wanted a Vette since being a kid ..... when I was 17 we used to ride in my buddies dad's C4 Vette - have not felt that feeling again until buying one myself earlier this year - huge step up from the Firebird I used to have)

So I guess what I am saying is that I do not mind having thinner tires (all around) if that is the only way to ensure optimum handling performance.

Would 285's, 295's (versus the 275) have a significant impact?

Would the brand I choose have a bigger impact in overall performance than the size chosen?

As always - many thanks

Dear all

Just got back to Toronto for the next couple of months (Jan-Feb not so warm in these parts come winter) and as there is yet no snow on the ground I had to take my 89 for a spin (which has been sitting in a quasi heated garage for the past 2 months). While driving I found the left side of the car had a bit of a wabble at low speed and one hell of a car wide vibration at higher speed (felt like a slightly flat tire) which all 4 tires are full of air (so not down to air pressure).

Towards the end of my last stay in Toronto a couple of moths back I did notice a leak in the left rear wheel - parts were missing for the cars Jack (and the 89 (like my 92 in the UK) did not come with a security lug nut to remove the security bolt anyway) so I did fill the tire with a can of that air-gew - filled it enough to get me to a gas station where I topped up the tire and ran it for a good 20 miles so the gew would set as well as could be hoped). I can't complain as it did what it said it would on the tin.

I suspect now that winter has set in and that the car sat for the past 2 months that the gew may have come unstuck with the cold and has seriously altered the balance of the rear left tire - I took my 89 to my local mechanic when I was here last whom did not want to wreck the lug-nut to get the tire off but he did think the radial in the tire was also damaged as a result of being run on when very low/flat.

OK - so be it - As I know that no harm has come to the car over the past 2 months I feel pretty sure this is all tire related. I am considering an early Christmas present for me-self and replacing all 4 tires on the 89. I learned that when replacing the rears on my 92 (which had 275x40x17's) that I could also replace them with a slightly wider 285x40x17 - which I did (thanks for that info)

So when considering replacing all 4 tires on the 89 - what would you guys recommend?

Things like

Max Size
Make
Other considerations etc

Many many thanks once again - your insights and ideas are always greatly appreciated

Many thanks for all your help - new tires feel fine - feel a bit of play/sway when driving in a straight line - probably take a while for them to break in and match up to the Pirelli's on the front. (seemed the Pirelli's and previous BF Goodrich's played well together - and as there was no BF UK option for me hopefully the Coopers will play nice too)

Really appreciate all your insights guys

SORTED

managed to find some tires (or tyres as they spell it over here) They were Cooper 2XS 285x40x17's - anyone heard of these (your feedback would be much appreciated)

Apparently made in Texas (so they can't be bad) just worried how CHEAP they were - I replaced both back tires and the cost (including fitting) was £150 per wheel (or about $300 USD) The Pirelli option was over $600 per wheel

Only reason I am worried is beacuse I know you "get what you pay for" in this world and there ain't no free lunch - hope I will live to regret them !! (versus dying pusheing them too hard on the many many round-about's in these parts)

Thanks for all your help

FYI - I was able to get replacement Chevy security lug-nuts from a Store called Halfords here in the UK for £30 (£60 USD) Had to get them ASAP as I only had 4 bolts holding on the back wheels as the shop whom changed them had none that fit

Seemed the lug nut the tow truck guy had was not gripping it - can't say for sure it was not seized as well though.

I have been looking for tires and may be in luck - do these sound like they will do the job

BF Goodrich g-Force Profiler
Tyre size Load Index Speed symbol
245/40 R 17 91 Y

I am in Milton Keynes in the UK and there seems to be a few BF dealers about - if these will match a 92 Vette I could be half way there. Will call when open to verify stock

Should your average mechanic be able to force off the security lug-nut without damaging the rim?

Lastly this car did not come with a manual/package which would have held the lug-nut too - hope it can be forced off - can always pick up replacement security lug-nuts on ebay etc.

Any inspired ideas on how to force off the existing lug-nut would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for everyones time - now 3am and I think there is nothing else I can do tonight

Just got home !!

I was picked up by the tow truck - went to the car and jacked it up - spare tire was flat ... what makes this even better is that there was not lug-nut ANYWHERE to take the security bolt off the tire - the tow truck guy had some keys (UK fit all lug nut set) he thought would get it off but no joy - could not budge it ... but wait .... the existing tire still on the car that went flat has a rip in the inside you can stick your hand in (so it is %^$%W"'d !!)

Good news is the tow comnpany took the car and are storing it on the back of thier flat-bed truck in their yard till morning .... So now I have to figure out how to get:

- The existing lug-nut off
- A replacement spare tire for a 92 Vette in England ASAP as ideally I need the car for Thursday (I say old boy - you are once again well and truly boned !!!)

I plan to search the net tonight for possible replacement rear tires as I imagine this would be best (input greatly apprecated here - the fronts are both Pirelli's but the backs are both BF Goodrich ZR4 (Size 275 40Z R17) - so with any luck Pirelli might have an UK option for me over here)

Also will try the shop that workes on the car - they may have both the lug-nut and a replacment tire but do not want the 2.5 hour each way to get them (may have not option)

Your thoughts are always appreciated (be kind - been a long hard night so far and it ain't over yet - now 1:50 am and expect I'll see the sun rise before I have a possible/plausible plan of attack here)

The car is a 92

Dear All

Just wanted you all to know this is now resolved (thanks for your many responses (helped me rule out a lot of things)

Turns out it was down the the key lock in the door - when I unlock the car with the key (by turning the key clockwise 90 degrees) I can pull the key out of the car (while the key lock position is still way to the right - if I leave the key in this position then the lights stay on, however if I unlock the car and ensure I return the key to the straight-up position then there is NO problem with the lights at all

just hoped this may help someone else someday...

thanks again for all your time

Look for their Spiro-Pro, 8mm wires.

The next time it's wet, try wiggling the connectiors on the coil and ign. module. You could also spray those with WD40.
WD40 is Water Displacement (Formula 40)

Dear Bill

Thanks for your time mate !!

I will order the wires you have suggested (cheers)

Also - tried WD40 in the rough area I think the opti/coil/ign but to be honest I am not sure exactly where they are on the LT1. I believe it to be where I can see the spark plug wires join together in what I would have called a distributor (not sure if opti is the Vette equivalent) - this area is located towards the bottom left of the engine block if you were looking at it head on (this is the area I used the hair dryer on to get it to start last time it was soaking out)

If you folks have any images which might help me better isolate the opti/coil/ign on the block then I sure would appreciate it

Have you done the "underhood light show" test?

Basically start the engine at night with the hood open.
If the wires are leaking you'll see a show.
How does the harness look?
How about the coil? and the inanition module?

Many thanx Brian - will look for the light show and advise (should I be looking for it when the engine starts OK or only when it won't start ... when it is dry out she starts first time every time)

The harness is OK I believe (although when I got the car I had to replace the ECM as it had burned out - so there could be some damage I am unaware of) and lastly I have written to the shop whom did the opti-swap and asked when I can come back to get these checked out)

Forgive my ignorance here - but what would your North American guestimate be should either/both the coil; and ignition module require fixing?

Sure appreciate your time

Replaced the opti-spark and alternator last week (cost a small fortune) but it has not solved the problem - car still won't start when it is wet out. If I use a hair-dryer and point it at the distributor/opti-spark area for 10-15 mins or so then the car will start.

Mate of mine figures it could be the spark-plug wires themselves (I have had a wire off a plug and there is a spark even when it will not start - with the old opti-spark installed) so I guess my guts are leaning away from this.

If I do replace the plugs (being in the UK) I imagine I should source cables for GM/Corevette specific or are these off-the-shelf types of wires.

As always - many thanks - still prayin for sun and crying over my un-needed opti-spark bill!

Dear All

I believe my problem is my Opti-Spark (having the car serviced soon so should get worked out one way or another) due to a rad hose leak I had on top of the engine block leaking down into the opti-spark. Presently the car cranks (you can smell gas in the air) but no ignition (car does a 2 cylinder sounding putter and quits)... not good.

Main problem is it has been raining all week and I just want to get her back in my garage (where it is dry and warm) pushing is unfortunately not a good option (maybe 1.5 inches either side of the mirrors to the garage door entrance - way too tight for me to trust/risk my pub pals to push into safely!).

When the ground is dry she starts first try. Also, previously if I tried to start the car for a minute or so (and it does not start - smell of gas in air) - if I then tried to start again in 15-30 mins it sometimes starts (but no joy at present using this method)... any short term ideas on how to get her going and in my garage would be greatly appreciated

.... cryin in the rain !!

many thanks

But this also happens in daylight.

{Q4} Under low light conditions, the interior lights stay on for 20 seconds after closing the doors/hatch on my 91. I had aproblem where they wouldn't shut off. It turned out to be a relay under the dash near the glovebox that was sticking. You can hear it.

[Q5] If the car has higher mileage, blame them... they both control the lights and could simply be worn out. I have a lot of miles on mine and this is quite common with my interior lights, too.

[Q6] And yes, I believe both functions are ultimately controlled by the CCM.

Dear All - thanks so much for the huge response - seems I'm not alone in being lit up like a Christmas Tree after dark

[A1] Yes - sure of it - my girl and I laugh at this irony everytime

[A2] Yes - I would guess even longer (last time they went off it was when we were on a very dark road at night) was about 45 mins into our journey

[A3] Sounds similar - but mine acts fine during day

[A4] You kindly wrote "turned out to be a relay under the dash near the glovebox that was sticking. You can hear it." ... sounds promising - I will listen for such a wining relay - do you by any chance recall the relays name/function and I should be able to have it tested as the fault

[A5] We are in the same boat then ..... miles are low - 38,000

[A6] This too sounds like a possible culprit - are they pricey to replace?

Many many thanks for all your time - as always it is much appreciated

Dear All

Strange thing .... when I use the car at dusk and in the eveing the interior lights come and and stay on for half and hour - then they shut off - any ideas on the cause and or a work around.

many thanks

As I suspected earlier, the speakers are mounted poorly, that's a big reason they sound crappy. You would be better off with the speaker pods as Jeff illustrated. It might not be a bad idea to pick those pods up if you think it's a good price.

PS - as far as the "amps" on the pods now, they were originally for the bose system that used different impedance speakers. You would not use them.

Cheers Matt - I actually got all 4 speaker corners for $50 (including both front and read housings) + another $50 for the shipping - making it $100 for all 4 - I also ordered a rear shade, center console + a new glove box door - all for $210 (this included the shipping too) so I feel I got a pretty sweet deal

So bypass the built in electronics on each speaker then - just run em straight - OK pal will do.

Sure appreciate all your time fella's

cheers pal (nice!) - I do not even have the stock housing - nada - nothing - zip - only a badly mounted 6" in a space clearly designed for the shaped housing you have in your picture (ie stock housing)

mine sounds like chit too !

thanks - do you know if there is anyway to buy empty front speaker stock housings? I imagine I will have to source both (have seem them for $200 bucks a corner on ebay - which is why the all 4 corners for $100 originally seemed like a deal

thanks

Dear Matt

Thanks pal

The rears took the pioneer 6" speakers OK. But as you know the mounting area in the front is limited to say the least and only just took the 6" speakers - they are mounted OK but after seeing the shape of the Jensen units I figured this was the way to go.

You said to by-pass the circuit boards (take it they server no purpose for me then) forgive me but under what conditions would you use them (I was of the impression that they were mini-amps for each speaker ... guess not)

Because of the unusual shape of the front speaker mounting space - what would you recommend in there - there is nothing under the door sill panel(s) to speak of that resembles front speaker mount points (figure if there was anything it got gutted when the stereo and speakers were removed.) Thats part of the reason I was thinging these Jensens were a better option than what I have now

really do appreciate your time - I am not 100% sold on getting them anymore .... guess I could live with what I have for now and wait for the right things to come down the road - what would you figure the cheapest and best route would be (not an easy question I know)

warmest regards
kev

They are also not stock Z speakers, so they should tie into your current wiring no problem.

Cheers Matt

In essence they should work though right .... really not happy with the none-vette stock speakers I have in there right now and for a $100 bucks (including shipping) for all 4 corners I figure I will still be better off than I am now (plus the 6" pioneers I have in there not only barely fit but just dont sound right.

Once installed - Do you figure the new stereo will require adjustments for the front/back balance (right now with the 4 pioneers it comes out louder in the front so I have to adjust the front/back balance) I guess my question is are stock vette speakers pre-disposed to the correct front/back balance settings (or is this down to the stereo and not the speakers)

Far as my budget goes .... tight as I am trying to restore 2 Vettes in 2 countries all with the blessing of 1 girlfriend (gotta admit she's been a great sport to this point but I do not wish to push my luck) So where I can at this point I am more than happy to settle for used speakers if they fit/sound better - I'm hopin they will and thanks for your confirmation they will fit I will be paying for them tomorrow

Thanks a million Matt (well thanks $100)

Thanks all for the great advise !!!!

Sounds like Wilcox would be the right choice then (only want to make this decision once so better asking you good folks than just praying it will be right) - not to say that praying is still not a good option - saved my ass many times !!!

Also great input on possible colour combinations - light grey with black carpet may look nice too - just did not want it to look too much like a hybrid (as I luv all the interior combinations GM saw fit to put together)

thanx again

I am not 100% sure on the "stock" ZR1 speakers being Jensen. FWIW, Jensen are not generally considered top of the line speakers. I wouldn't even consider them mid grade.

Did you put in an aftermarket stereo or a stock one to replace the missing unit? If it's aftermarket, did you run new speaker wiring from the headunit to the speakers? I would recommend that.

Let us know a little more about what you replaced and then we can help you better.

Dear Matt

Thanks mate for your time - yes new aftermarket radio and wire has been run and here is a link to the Jensen speakers

Dear All

As previously said - the car did not come with a radio (so I have sourced and installed one - it has a reversing camera - well kewl!), However, seems at some point in her life the factory radio restraint mechanisms were trashed. The new radio is in place but slides back and forth (a bit) for now.

Any clever ideas on how one might go about securing the radio in place ???? Figure I will go to a proper radio installation place and get there advise if I can't come up with something soon

many many thanks

Dear All

One of many things I have had to do was install a Radio and speakers (as the car came with none - didn't even realise I needed speakers until I was installing the radio and found there was nothing behind the covers). As the car is inthe UK I did not have any Corvette OEM options .... so went out and picked up four 6" pioneer speakers. It works but does not sound that great. (I have an 89 Vette in Canada which really does sound nice so I know the 92 can sound better)

This week I picked up 4 orignal speakers of a 1990 ZR1 (grabbed some other bits too as the 92 really needs some work) I HAVE NOT PAID FOR THEM YET THOUGH - PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR ADVISE AS THIS COULD SAVE ME $100

So my question is - can you good people see any problems in me trying to fit the 1990 speakers (they are Jensens not Bose?) in my 1992? Will I need to do any additional wiring for the power plugs on the side of the jensens or is my 92 already equipted for this.

I will be back in the UK in a couple of weeks time and will be getting this on-going project back underway

Sure appreciate your time

Dear All

First off - thanks for any replies you may add for me to this question.

I am still in the midst of restore my 92 Vette and the carpet in there is the light grey (it is just too mucky to be salvaged so I am opting to replace it outright)

Is there a brand anyone can recommend (just want it to look like factory) I have found this on ebay - sounds right to me but wanted to hear from you all before I purchase it (thanks)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBa ... ewitem=&item=150283659135

Sounds like it is pre-moulded so should do the job OK ...

I plan to have a professional auto re-apolsterer install the carpet for me in the UK and was wondering on your views to the following thoughts

I was planning to replace the carpet in BLACK - this leaves me with the problem of the grey interior (ie backs of seats, cargo area moulding, door panels etc. I am not big on the idea of replacing all these parts with the proper black equivalent as this will surely add up.

So .... I was thinking that the same guys whom install the carpet might know how to paint the various plastic moulding bits and trim black as well. What do you think?

Don't want it to look like the dogs dinner - can this sort of thing be done properly or am I dreamin?

as always - greatly appreciate your time

Dearn All

Thanks so very much for your responses (sorry for not putting this in c4 audio). You have been greatly helpful - sounds like the BOSE Gold are crap and should be replaced. The one's I have are

DELCO GOLD BOSE SERIES.

If the previous owner had a 3rd party radio - would it stand to reason that the existing speaker layout should work (or may have already been altered?

I am just as happy to replace the speakers all the same if the results are worth it.

The radio was shipped from Bejing - the instructions are minimal at best and the last car radio I tried to wire had an 8 track in it (forgive me for not noticing the RCA jacks were ALL for 3rd party speaker wiring - I really should have noticed the main plug - good job I am not trying to fit this !)

Thanx again all - really do appreciate your time

Dear all

First of all - thanks for all your help to date (this is a great site)

When I picked up my 92 Vette back in March there was no radio in her. Must admit listening to the engine is music enough for me but my girl insisted I remedy this if we're driving across Europe (so I reluctantly have). The good folks whom got her running last March said there was little chance of easily putting a stock GM Radio back in as there has already been modifications for an after-market (3rd party) radio. So be it (only good ones I could find on ebay were $600 US).

So I now have a Double Din 7" touchscreen Radio/CD/TV/GPS/Rear Camera/USB etc etc etc system and am tracking down a shop whom can install it for me. GPS will be handy for Europe (has all maps) and rear camera WILL be handy too (not the easiest car I have ever backed into a parking space with!). I was hoping I could trouble you guys for some insights on the 92 Vette's radio wiring - you see the new system is all RCA (male/female) plugs so the existing wiring will need to be modified further. (Here is a link to the radio on EBAY - about half way down it shows a picture of this units rear wiring)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dl ... eName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=015

If I had the old radio I imagine the wiring would have been diagrammed on the top of the Delco radio (but not an option for me I'm afraid) so I imagine if someone could direct me to the wiring of the 92 Vette's speakers (as they go into the back of the radio so appropriate counter RCA cables can be fit for the installation).

MANY MANY THANKS

PS - Also I imagine some insights on how to remove the console covers so as to gain access to the radio bay would make the installers job easier (and my fears of them damaging the car more manageable). The Delco Speakers are self powered I understand - are they tricky to hook up to non-stock stereos.

PSS and insights on how to remove the Center console (as it requires restoration and wiring up of the stereo's various AV inputs/outputs) would also be greatly appreciated

Dear Mathew

Thanks pal - your advice (if it is the opti-spark) is much appreciated as is your common sense suggestion to swap out the water pump at the same time. I am dropping the car off tomorrow and the guys at Clairemont Corvette can baby her back to good health next week. I would like to pull the codes first though - I will have a crack tomorrow morning

take care and have a great weekend

Did the radiator hose leak on the front of the engine?

Dear 95vette

Possibly - it was a narrow rad-hose that runs from the front of the engine compartment over and into the top of the engine. The hose did not split in 2 but rather on the clamp that holds the hose (on top of the engine) had cut into the hose and so it was spraying fluid mainly onto the top of the clam shell in the form of a spray.

So as to answer your question - I was driving the car for 2 hours when this happened (not sure when it did occur) but the leak was isolated and repaired shortly after arrival). Because the hose that cracked was above the engine I do believe some of the rad fluid hit and ran down from the top of the engine.

If it is the Opti-Spark:

Are they pricey to replace?

Can they be repaired?

As it only seems to cut this way in the first 20 minutes - if I was sure I was past this point - do you believe I would be OK to drive the car to the repair Center (2 hours away) or do you think the car being warmed up has nothing to do with when it will cut out and I could end up stranded?

thanks everyone - sure appreciate you time
