Dear All

I am writing from the UK and trying to track down some brake pads (and discs if price is right) I have seen sets on ebay for between 200-250 bucks (this includes pads and disks) for my year except there seems to be 2 different types - here is an example of what I mean

- Chevy Corvette HD C4 88-96 (F&R) Brake Disc Rotors Pads

OR

- Chevy Corvette C4 88-95 F&R Drill Slot Brake Rotors Pad

The only bit that stands out to me is the HD in the top line. My girl is a 92 (bog standard LT1 I believe). I am not sure if there were any upgrade packages off the line. Is there an easy way to find out what sort of brakes I need to replace her tired feet with?

Warm regards and many thanks

Look under the consol lid at the option code sticker.

JL9 = STD Brakes
J55 = HD Brakes

You could also measure the rotor. STD brakes are a 12" rotor and HD brakes are a 13" rotor.

HD brakes are also much thicker.

I am not a fan of cheap drilled rotors. Good drilled rotors have the holes cast in them, they are fairly ok. The problem is that cheap drilled rotors are drilled, which leads to stress fractures around the holes.

I use stock 13" (J55) rotors, Hawk HPS pads and GS calipers with Goodrich SS brake lines. I also use Valvoline Synpower brake fluid. They work pretty good!!

Wow - thanks for the fast response

OK - had a look in the center console - definately have the JL9 = STD Brakes. Bogus kindly wrote

Sounds like the ones I am looking at are crap - to tell you the truth I think the existing rotors are OK - just the pads need replacing (hearing a slight squeek in the front left when brakes are not applied - hope it is the pads early warning that it is in need of replacement) So if I did get the rotors and pads for $200 but only used the pads (if thats all it needs) - I have not seen pads alone for less than this - really appreciate any advise here - if my rotors are OK and better than those I am looking at then thanks again - I do appreciate your time and advise

cheers

Just a quick comment - drilled rotors are unnecessary and simply an appearance item on modern cars. If you think they look cool, have at them, but they serve no performance purpose. And as bogus mentioned, cheap ones will be a hindrance as they could crack.

hi

i used the brake discs off ebay, with no problems or cracking to date, i used them with the hawk hps pads, the only issue i found was the e-brake isn't very efective when the pads are cold.

The HPS should work exactly like the stock pads on your E brake. Something else is the problem.

Moe, check your rotors with a micrometer.

STD. 92 rotors:

Rotor thickness: 20.2mm (0.795 in) Check 4 places on the rotor. Shouldn't vary by more than 0.013mm (0.0005 in)
Rotor thickness after refinish: 18.9mm (0.744 in)
Lateral Runout: 0.15mm (0.006 in) checked with a dial indicator on the rotor.
GM says throw the rotors away at 18.4mm (0.724 in)

Definately, as above, Hawk HPS pads. They run about $140 but are worth the cost.
If your rotors are in spec, all you have to do to them is clean them up, preferably with the 2inch scotchbrite pad on a drill. This can be done on the car and takes 5 minutes per rotor.
The HPS pads must be bedded in for good preformance. The instructions are on the box.
HPS pads will make a huge difference.

Bill, I'm not getting it. Which pads do you like?

Well, considering I've gone thru 100 sets of Hawk on the racecar, can you guess?

The HPS are the best I've seen for the street, especially with the std (12 inch) rotors. BUT, the bottom line on STD, HD, Z06 front calipers on C4's is that the brakes suck no matter what.

I wouldn't say they suck. They could be improved. JL9 is horrible, J55 not as bad as the JL9, C5 upgrade much better and a BBK is just the cats meow.

With that said i run Brembos front and rear on the ZR-1, and on the track car I'm running the C5 kit so far. I think the weight of the race car helps.

Yep, that says it all.

Guess I'm just used to hauling down a 1200 lb. car.
