I have, you can buy a new bearing and repair it that way by taking the dimensions of the stock bearing and buying one online or possibly McMAster Carr.
I got one at a local distributor here in INDY |

remember... some of the pulleys are plastic. over time, they do weaken. I would get a Goodyear replacement. IIRC, the last one I got was made in the USA and had an NTN bearing in it.

Check the whole unit, though. It's not just the bearings that go bad, the tension spring goes bad as well.

Thanks there Matt...
Got the tensioner off. Hard part was pulling hoses / coolant crossover. Just put them on clean with grease film a year ago. Pulley on tensioner feels good. But that internal spring HAS to be the culprit. I sprayed it with WD-40 several times before startup, and only once was it quiet. Granted, it is a tight shot with the lube... But this thing only has 37K. ??? |

Miles might be low, but years are not. It is said that a tensioned spring loses tension over time.

Btdt. Changed bearing and it still squeaked, tried douching the spring, then finally replaced the whole thing. I found wet lubes would make it worse? Maybe due to attracting dust? Honestly brake cleaner or gasoline would be a better temporary fix.
But the smog pump is also a good suspect for belt noise. I just pulled that apart too. I'll post a thread soon on how easy it is to screw it up. |

the tensioner is weird... it's a coil spring, but has a plastic/nylon/composite of some sort pad. I think that pad wears out, too, causing noise.
I am not a fan of messing with the tensioner. |

Well - not the best news from Marc Haibeck...
He said my pulley (from L-98), looked "ok", before he re-fitted new parts. So I read that L-98 parts could be fitted to my tensioner. When did it get the L-98 parts? It still has only 37K on it, so this is the third??? And WD-40, one pulley @ a time, doesn't really work for diagnostic, for start-up chirping, since they're all sealed. He said check A/C pulley next. Check it? I tried FIRST using a hose, but could not isolate. It needs a FUNNEL on the end, but a funnel ain't got much real estate to work around in there. IF IT IS A/C, wouldn't turning A/C on and off, WHILE IT'S CHIRPING, have an effect??? These pulleys are pretty much the same for all C4's, no? |

Chuck, I don't know how far the pulley is buried in the engine bay. But a mechanic's stethoscope has a long metal rod that you place against that area you are trying to listen to. Shouldn't have to stuff any fingers down there.

Great - another tool...
If the new tensioner doesn't get it, I'll probably be there. Anybody got one I can BORROW? I'll pay full cost + postage up front. Cheap OR expensive, I'm runnin' out of space for once-used tools, that you have to navigate through to get to the rest of the stuff... And gun tools / armorer's hardware is even WORSE! |

BTW, the cheapie HF mechanic's stethoscope is $4 which is less than postage. You could use it and give it away once done. |

I got lucky. DOin' sorta' what I preach most AGAINST - PLUG N PRAY diagnostics.
Put in the re-worked tensioner (after doin' some cleanup and paint), and then spun it up. QUIET - no chirp. In fact, it spun up immediately, something it rarely does, which is strange because I did nothing else (which seems to be a common problem after so many years; even lower mile, well tuned motors). But second turn, it took a few seconds... Now time to try and learn coding....... I took a few more shots along the way: AIR pump out: and snorkel re-coat TB Extension |

Looks good, but I'd dump the K&N. They pass way too much dirt. I think because it's impossible to evenly coat the pleats by spraying it. The peaks will always be overloaded and the sides too little. Plus on the early cars it's hard to get a good seal on the hard poly surround with only 2 bolts on the flimsy intake. I still run one though because the paper one is too tall and blocks my cold air duct.

Missed this there CC...
Never known anyone who didn't care for K&N... Only rap is TOO much oil - (for MAF Filament) I go VERY LIGHT on it. And directions DO say let it sit for ? hrs before install. I do them for all my stuff. Obsessive for clean - I vacuum house A/C filter every no more than 3 days. And if you've seen my wrenchin' posts, cleaning bolt threads with wire brush, AND bolt holes too, you'll see why K&N (or Spectre / wannabe K & N). Paper probably DOES flow better, I'm guessin'. Anyone??? Quote:
