Has anyone tried stick on wheel weights that you can put in the center of the rim as opposed to the standard inside/outside edge weights. One guy at a tire shop said don't bother, they're crap, they fall off. I don't want the ugly weight on the outside of the rim and if I go inside only it's not properly balanced.

Well, they don't go in the center per say, but they do go inside the wheel barrel, some towards the front of the wheel and some towards the back depending on the balance.

I've never had one fall off, even at the track and with lots of brake heat, but the double-sided tape used does breakdown over time and chemicals from cleaning your wheels can loosen it.

I've seen some racers put duct tape over it to be safe.

The ones that mount to the wheel lip WILL damage your wheel. Ok for a steel wheel on a commuter, but not on aluminum IMO. I wouldn't bother with any tire shop that says "don't bother"... it sorta tells you most of their customers have low expectations.

Thanks CC. On Ebay you can buy them by the box. If I lost any I could just replace them provided you could see where the lost ones were placed.

Find a new tire shop. I have thrown a weight once or twice in my time at the track. But street use they are fine. The barrel of the wheel just needs to be wiped down to clean the spot.

I have the stick on inside weights on my rims, no problems.

Stick ons will work fine.

Most important - What Jeff said, a clean wheel. And a tire shop guy who says they fall off is probably taking one swipe with a rag and saying "That's clean enough".

Putting them in the center of the wheel is only for guys like who mount their own tires and use a bubble balancer. I only do this on race tires. I have my street tires done at a shop.

I've even reused stick ons by cleaning them and using yellow trim adhesive. I always tape them on the race wheels.
