Anybody know a good source for stub axle snap rings? I have looked online and locally (Spicer reps) with no luck.
If not, has anyone tried to heat the old retainers to bring back in correct shape? I did a gear swap and clutch pack replacement, but the snap rings unfortunately were twisted a little. Thanks, I know this forum will have someone of knowledge out there. |

They have to be certain thicknesses for teh propper stub end play. If you move the carrier over .010" you need to subtract .010" from one side, add it to the other, and so on. With that said, I have some left over from when I did mine. I could probably locate them if you know what colors you need. -- Joe |

Jhammons found some sources for parts when he did his rear end work, he should chime in. He ended up getting some parts from his local differential rebuild shop, so you might try there for a lead if you have someone close.

Thanks Joe. The thickness I need is .050" or 1.27mm. The color is plain (uncolored). If you also have the blue, I'll buy those as well. Blues are .055" or 1.40mm.
I probably set up the backlash a little tight. Spec is .006-.009" and I'm right at .005". Probably why the old rings don't seat completely. So, I may have to tear is down again. Pinion depth and preload are both good, although I could use a little more preload. This is no time to cut corners, so I will tear it down and make adjustments. Thanks again. I'm new to these type forums, so how do we proceed? |

Proceed just like you're doing. Welcome. Your question on heating the rings to reshape them, No, they're spring steel and you'll probably loose the spring by heating. Hopefully Joe can help. McMaster has some .050 for various groove diameters. http://www.mcmaster.com/#retaining-rings/=51l32m I've seen that avatar somewhere. |

Thanks BillH. I didn't like the heating option for the reason you stated. Thanks for the McMaster site too, good stuff. My avatar picture was taken a few years ago at the Bondurant track in Phoenix. This was before Bob had Corvettes out there, just SVT Mustangs. It was a good time though. |

I went thru Bob's facility quite a few years ago. I got to BS with him this summer at the Reno Historic races, he was the Grand Marshall. |

Restomod, remember the guy in Huntington Beach?? You spoke to him on the phone.
That is the guy you need for those types of obscure parts. He has them all, and usually in stock. |

Thanks jhammons - I have spoken with him, but not on this. I asked him about 3.73 R&P and if he had any. He said he needed two sets but his sources didn't have any. My research showed mfr's not making that ratio - maybe ever again. So I went with 3.54 instead.
What is made is the thick 3.73 gear set. But my carrier being a type 3 won't accept the thick sets. Anyway, I'll give him a call if the McMaster snap rings don't do the trick. Thanks for all the help guys - this is what forums should be about. Steve |

True Dat....
I told a story a few weeks ago to someone..... When I was a kid (20s or so) for info...I had three guys I knew in my small town that I went to. If I was trying to figure out something technical....I used to have to drive over and BS with that person for ~20 minutes and then ask them........"How do you fix [insert whatever]" and they would give me their opinion. This may take all day if the first two didn't have a good answer.... But that is how I used to have to learn things new. Now days it takes roughly 5 minutes to bring up a topic and learn from some real pro's. That D36 issue was pretty frustrating however, The common fix for the D36 is......Dump it and put in a D44. No one "Fixes" a D36. Or they send it in to guys like J&S You ask which Valve spring for ?? Type head and you get 50 answers in 14 minutes, you ask about that snap ring and it may take a while. We have real pro's here at Guru, but that certain pro may be gone on a business trip (LOL) just when you need his/her help..... But anyway, yes this is what forums are about. And I've met some really neat folks like CentralCoaster and Bogus through the Forums. Those two are Top notch types that I am honored to know. |
