I am in the process of tuning my 90. I am amazed that I am taking off the original parts. The coil had 4-10-90 stamped on top. I am also amazed at the amount of garbage that is in the engine bay because of the emissions control system. Is any of this removable without effecting the tune? We do not have emissions testing out here and I would like to do some clean up if it did not screw up the way the car is set up to run. Thanks

For the most part, yes. You can remove it.

I am not a fan of the air pump, it only really helps for the first mile or so until the cats warm, but the precats warm fast anyway... so who cares?

For that matter, the precats are rather pointless anyway.

But... removal of the airpump and lines will give you a ton more room and free up about 5~10hp, depending on the condition of the pump.

I would leave the EGR. I like what EGR does.

For the air pump, you can either buy a pricey eliminator ($150) or take your current pump apart and break the inside fins with a hammer and screwdriver essentially making it a pulley itself. All the lines to/from it can be removed including the ones going to the exhaust manifolds. Then just cap off the open ends on the manifolds. Looks much nicer and makes it easier to work on in the future.

Some of the stuff I removed (air pump went back in):

Cleaner without that junk:

I did what Matt did but left one pipe and rerouted a hose or two so it still looked functional without 80% of the junk.

You should also disable the air injection 02 offset in the prom.

Yeah, it's just for show mostly. I bolt it back on every 2 years for the smog test, none of it is hooked up.

Are the threads on the manifold tubes something ordinary or are they some one off GM thing? I am thinking of a nice metal cap that would fit right in.

I have most of the pieces out and Lord help me if I ever have to put them back. I started out nice and neat trying to keep everything in order and ended up cutting and cursing and throwing parts against the garage wall with a take that you sonofabitch.

IIRC I found some not ugly brass caps at Ace and they threaded right on. Better looking than iron pipe.

I would consider cutting the small tubes off the manifolds and weld the holes up... it would look REALLY clean that way.

I thought of that but found some nice brass plugs for now. Maybe a next winter project. It would look real clean. I replaced the PVC on the driver side valve cover and then was going to replace the other side and it was only a direct vent into the Throttle body I think. Is that the way it is on your vettes? marc

keep the PCV system. It really does lower nasty things from entering the atmosphere. And it has zero effect on performance.

Yeah, I was not going to mess with it. I just thought there were 2 pvc valves one on each side of the engine and was suprised when the other side was a straight tube back to the intake. What does the valve on the drivers side valve cover do exactly and why not have them on both sides.

Lot of questions I got!

The passenger side tube lets filtered air into the crankcase to help the pcv flush it out and also serves as a path to allow excess crankcase pressure to overflow back into the intake. The pcv doesn't work too well at WOT, since there is hardly any manifold vacuum to work with.
