Long story short: Gutted A.I.R. pump last year and lubed it. AC compressor is shot and no longer works for about a year. Both are squeaking REALLY REALLY bad. I mean bad enough that you can hear it over idle...

Yesterday while driving, BOTH of them apparently locked up and tore the belt all to hell. Is this even possible? Freak Accident? Why would they lock up? Replacing both but damn, that was really scary....

Sounds like bearings went bad. I had my AC pump lock up a couple yrs ago. But damn to have them both go at once is just bad luck.

stop replacing parts... get the pump bypass kit and use that.

as for the compressor, the clutch shouldn't seize, that's odd... but a new compressor and clutch will fix it.

When that happened to my pickup I had to replace everything on the AC due to shrapnal blowing all through the system when it froze up. I have a 99 Chevy stepside with 100K and the Compressor just started to rattle so I was told to put in a new one before it grenaded and not have to replace everything else.

I'm wondering if the one seized up first and then caused the belt to start locking and slipping, damaging the second.

I'd just get the eliminator at this point. And a new AC compressor isn't cheap.

AC clutches seize all the time, especially in parts of the country where AC isn't used much. On newer vehicles, the computer cycles the clutch on and off constantly to keep it from seizing up.

While I have not seen it as pronounced in Dodge, or Ford, I've seen dozens of GM vehicles over the years with seized AC clutches because the owner removed the AC, but left the compressor in place rather than getting a delete pulley.

Interesting... when my climate controls are off, so is the compressor. I never feel it cycle.
