In the new Hot Rod they have an article on instaling LS3's or LS7's in just about anything and they go like stink. They feature some C2's that had been converted and a mustang and others but no C4's.

How much do you think it would cost to replace an L98? Would it be about the same as a total 383 rebuild? You would need a new tranny also I am sure. I'm not thinking about doing it, just curious.

Corvette Fever (now Vette) did a C4 - there's a bunch of articles here:

http://www.corvettefever.com/sch/02/c4orce/articles/index.html

No idea what it would cost, but I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap.

Nothing is cheap, per se... it's where the best bang/buck relationship exists.

If you try to build a 500hp L98, it will cost you a bucket of cash; I doubt much change from $7k. At least. It will cost you that much for a blower kit if you go that route, and then still have to build the motor to deal with it. Then comes the tuning... And God help you if you need to pass emissions.

Now, if you want a used LS7, I am guessing they are running about half the cost of a new crate LS7, but I haven't confirmed that. However, that smells like the trend.

And you won't have to deal with tuning, emissions or any of those problems.

Just something to think about.

I'm thinking used LS7's can't be just laying around all over the place. What I would like to see is a step by step article on how to do it from one of the Vette mags or from a Guru.

The step by step is mechanically easy. Turn bolts, there is nothing abstract about it.

There are various kits to interface the motor mounts and even the ZF6spd.

That isn't the hard part... for later C4's, the hard part is harness integration. If you wish to maintain the CCM and most of its associated functions, you must leave a modified ECM behind. That is where it gets tricky.

Exhaust would require fabrication.

They might, but I must deal with CA smog standards, so I can't run'm. I have to run the factory manifolds, which have the cats integrated into them.

You see, the emissions standard follows the ENGINE, not the car. This means that if I put in a 2006 engine, it must pass 2006 standards. Simple.

This also means I cannot put an engine in from a prior year. Now, this gets a bit fiddly, let's say I have a 1994 Vette, and I need a motor, no one will really care I have put in a 1992 LT1. Follow? Those things are hard to track, and not even CARB cares to check numbers that closely.

But more accurately, I cannot put in an L98, for example.

Ahh I see. Just use a BBC 454 from a late model truck and soup it up a lil. Same year. More power.

Andy, do you think they would really know the difference between LT1 and LS1? Its only one letter? Jeez, California...

Oops... can't do that, either. The EPA rules do not permit using a truck engine in a car... That gets harder to prove, tho... especially if you are dealing with the difference between an iron LQ9 and an aluminum LS1...

those dipshits don't know the numbers... they know enough to know what to expect to see... then they start asking questions.

My observation? Most shops that do smog tests are more concerned with the numbers than the visual.

The upside of their conversion is simple - if they want to do an LS7, they can. If they want to do an LS9, they can.

The hard part is done.
