I need to do something to allow sound through a door panel
Here is the area (back side) I need it to be here is the front: Any ideas on how to make it work? I just need this to be some sort of grill area |

wow... I hate those later door panels...
You can try to eat up the plastic from the inside, leaving the vinyl... then using a punch and awl, put some holes into it, then reback it with screen material to give it strength. Does that make sense? |

Do you want to cut the door panel? Or leave it looking the shape it's in?

I suspect the vinyl will survive... it will just be tricky...

How big does the speaker opening need to be? Off the top of my head, I think you could use a cardboard tube (heavy duty) and cut out the circle, insert the tube and fiberglass it in, then wrap in vinyl and cover with a grill. Does that make sense the way I typed it? It's a lot of work, but I know that doesn't scare you

speaker in the door is 6.5" and will be doing mid-bass duty only. due to the dash it is partially blocked BUT, there is a cavity between the door panel and door, I am leaving the speaking in the doors themselves, so I could even do a 4" DIA grill in that area. I need to see how the 4" grill would work too.
I was not looking into doing something too complex if I can avoid it.. also not sure how to keep the vinyl from curling on the edges after cutting. While is might not happen right away it could still happen |

The other option is to go totally off the deep end. Build the pod like I did (and Matt suggested) then wrap the entire panel in fresh vinyl, or even leather. At this stage, even something like Alcantara could be integrated.

Here is the score... remember the speaker pod I made with the Jag speaker grill and bezel? That took about 3 hours to make, with about 48 hours wall time, waiting for things to dry/set.
It won't take much to fix and modify the panels. |

I'm not sure of a way to perforate the vinyl without it looking uneven and crappy. Maybe mark grid lines on it in a hex pattern with something removeable, then peel the vinyl off and use a leather punch against a wood board behind it. Then mark and do the same holes in the plastic behind it, remove whatever padding is in there, then reinforce the plastic or vinyl if necessary.

Need to look at this again due to the new door configuration with my door locks
So I am thinking a 4" round grill just to let the midbass sound through.. I will try to get a pic of what I am thinking |

Now that I need to get these working for the car.. I was looking around for some grills to try and found some that will work perfectly and are flexible (to a point)
I will cut out holes in the doors for these and cover the grills in grill cloth. I also have to add a few pieces for mounting them but I think this is a perfect/not too complex solution: left side is fairly easy: Passenger side while a bit harder with this grill it will be much better and I already have the grill contour close tot he panel: |

Looks good so far! You might have to secure the grill using a bolt/nut on the back. I'm not sure if there will be enough bite in just the panel itself.

Awesome. For my car I just got some fabric at JoAnnes...basic black cloth...they didn't have "speaker fabric" specifically, but I only paid like 3-4 dollars for a yard or two.

Nice work. So, the speaker is nearby but not directly behind the grill?

Gotta love a job well done! And one that was CHEAP to do!
How does it sound? That fabric looks shear enough to not block sound. |

That looks nice! Makes me wish I hadn't disposed of my rear inner grills.
Question: How are the speakers mounted? I am about to rip out all the interior (again) to install an amp and want to get rid of the 4's in kick panels and mount some 5.25 components in the doors. |

Someone asked about sound
well.. the 6.5" sound great, the rest is well.. meh I REALLY need to go active, I have the nak in there due to noise from the Eclipse. Active sounded good, so I am thinking of looking at the MiniDSP again.. then I don't need a 3-way headunit.. but I will deal with the system for the summer |
