Well the end of an era happened. I had a stereo that had survived since 1990 via trips from Alaska, Virginia, Texas, Mississippi, Oregon and Washington. The last year she has been struggling and last night was apparently the last.

So now I am on the hunt. Looking for something that has an ipod dock or at least a connector jack. Needs to have an AM/FM tuner built in. And I guess be relatively compact.

What are you guys using?

I use a hand-me-down Bose Wave Radio. It has an AUX In and I can jack my DROID right into it. Also plays decent music through the radio. This is one of the first generation Wave Radios, I got it from my mom, but I think they are not too expensive on Craigs List or eBay.

Radios are so cheap nowadays and they all have aux jacks built in that should work with your ipod.

Are you looking for a specific recommendation or what?

Just ballpark recommendations. If somebody has a nice little bookshelf system. But seems like nobody here works on their cars. Or at least with tunes playing.

Had some people mention www.ilive.net

When my car still had the battery in it and the electrical system in tact, I would actually listen to the on board stereo with my battery tender plugged in. Never had a problem doing it that way.

Well, in the garage I have a 15 year old shelf system...I think it's aiwa. Works fine for me. In the basement when I work out I have a sony shelf system that was around $100 that I got for xmas...center stack with 3 cd changer, tape, radio and two speakers. I usually listen to radio or cd, I don't have an ipod. I like Sony's quality of their stereos. In the living room I have a high end Yamaha 6.1 system that was more in the 5-600 range when new but that is for an entertainment center setup.

How about something like this Sony with an ipod dock:

I bought a floor model bookshelf system at Sears, can't remember how much but IIRC about $150. I have a portable Sirius receiver that plugs into the AUX.

I like the bass boost for when I'm under the car...the nieghbors do not.

Well, not that I work on it or anything.

In the garage, I'm using my 1980's Technics receiver. I had a wire that went from 1/8" male to twin RCA's, will play my Sony MP3 or my Ipod Touch. In the wood shop I recently bought (from the "rotten rack" at Sams, a Bose portable stereo dock. It has a direct connect for the Ipod or has 1/8" input that I can play the Sony through. I know you guys generally don't like Bose, but this portable has great sound and using the Ipod through the direct connect sounds awesome......and I can get enough volume that I can listen even if I have my dust collector and 20" planer running.

I luv Bose, but they aren't in my C4.

And my 901's won't fit in the back with the hatch closed.

Buy these speakers, plug them into your headphone jack:

http://www.klipsch.com/na-en/products/promedia-2-1-overview/

These are the first and only computer speakers that actually can fill a room with sound. Impressive.

A set of Klipsch La Scalas would sound nice. Only $2,600....each.
