I just received my Spec stage 3+ clutch and the clutch disk hub is unsprung. I spoke to LMPerformance (Spec) and they told me that it is designed with a solid hub (contrary to the description on their website).

My 1992 LT1 has a single mass flywheel, which is why I ordered the Spec.

I'm kind of OK with having an unsprung hub / single mass flywheel, but wanted some opinions on street drivability before I decide whether to install the clutch or maybe shop around for a sprung version.

The only guy who I read about installing a SMF and unsprung clutch ended up converting to an automatic transmission. That's because he HATED the driveability and noise.

The Stage 3+ is crap load of clutch.

All of the Stage 3+ I have seen were sprung hub. The Stage 4 is solid hub but it's a puck style. Maybe you got a clutch set up for the Dual Mass FW??

I run the regular Stage 3 (sprung disk 6 puck) and it hit's so hard (if I just dump it) that I can explode the rear end at will. Took me a few tries to learn how to launch the car without destroying stuff (wa an expensive learning curve).

I would not run an unsprung disk with a Single Mass FW.

I can't speak from personal experience (I'm running a sprung-hub Stage 2 Spec clutch with their extra-weight billet steel SMF in my '94), so I can't comment on driveabilty issues, but I would be very wary of installing a solid-hub clutch disc in a car with a SMF. Those hub springs help to soften driveline shock, and without them, or the springs in a DMF, I'd be worried about grenading gearboxes, D44s, driveshafts and halfshafts.

Did Spec recommend you go ahead and install that solid-hub disc with your SMF?

Live well,

SJW

Edit: Looks like the previous reply got there while I was typing mine. So... What he said!

this is for the YSI install?

you kind of limited to what's going to be able to hold that puppy.

that's the reason I went with the dual disk, which is also going to be grabby.

I'm less worry about that, more worried about the shock to the drivetrain.

Initially, yes, but they are going to go check.

Yes - for the YSi install.

I'm also concerned about the drivetrain, but I have some experience with race clutches and feel confident that I could control the launch with a bit of slip/higher revs.

I'm going to wait on Spec, but at this point I am planning to agree/return the clutch for a sprung hub unit.
