Any LT4 owner know if the original LT4 springs had dampers inside them? I just bought a set from Pace and sent them to my machinist. They came without the internal damper. When I asked if he would use the original dampers he stated that if it needed a damper GMPP would have sent them with the springs. Anyone know? What is the dampers purpose in life anyways? Do I need it? Thanks.

GM factory LT4 springs do NOT have a flat wire damper.
The damper is to reduce spring harmonics. When GM started the LT1/4's one of the big technical advances was in the valve springs. They used a special type of wire that had an ovate crosssection (as oposed to round). The ovate wire springs did not need a damper to keep the spring harmonics under control. Will |

Groovy! Thanks Bogus and Reckless, I just never seen one on a SBC without it. I should learn to trust my engine builder. Thanks Guys.

Cool to know about the spring design... I was thinking back when I installed my take off LT4 heads didn't recall seeing one either, but that was years ago..

They're also nice if the spring breaks, keeps the valve out of the piston.

It is just a second smaller spring. Never heard it called a dampner. They are not used as much anymore.
