New guy here!
Had the C4 for a month now and its run perfectly for about 800 miles. (I know a lot for a month :-)) VATS seems flakey but working... Prior: replace instrument panel lights and they all work. The Event: Going down a hilly up and down road about 1.5 miles from the house the C4 started bucking and backfiring. I got it to the house with difficulty, especially going up the hills in second gear (automatic) with throttle about 3/4 depressed. Now: It starts for about a second, then quits and stinks to high heaven till it dissipates. Help me please, Mike |

My guess (of one item) is the fuel pump. It's a known issue, I had similar problems with my '91, replaced the pump and it runs like a dream. Then again, could be injectors, EGR, or even an ignition component getting hot...but I'd start with the fuel pump. |

I agree, but I would check fuel pressure before buying and installing a new pump. Pressure should be checked before and after the fuel regulator for best comparative results. This will also help you determine if it is in fact the pump, or the regulator. It will also help to know the target pressures. What the pump is supposed to carry, as well as what the regulator shows the fuel system.

Wouldn't the 'stink' be a sign of a clogged cat?

I was thinking the same thing...
Describe the stink? Rotten eggs? or simply exhaust smell? up hill makes me think load related, or, fuel slosh and not getting enough fuel in. Fuel filter could be clogged up, too. Check all plugs and wires, make sure everything is tight. Start it cold and if it goes bad as it heats up, I would think component failure. |

Well... first thing I tried was unplugging the MAS and attempting the start. Did not start and run on first attempt but did on next attempt. Tested several times. Tells me I have a bad MAS or wire in the harness or a bad ECM connection to the MAS.
It runs, but not well since it's not getting any air data. Am I correct in this thinking? Thoughts? |

I checked all plugs and wires. No rotten egg smell, just unburned full mixed with exhaust.
If the MAS replacement does not work I'll be starting over on the debugging. |

Hi Mike. My dad had the same problem with one of his Chevy Trucks. Clogged Cat. He had replaced quite a few things before cutting the cats off. Run great after that! Erin

If you have an IR temperature gun, you can do a simple check by getting the car up to operating temp, hold the throttle at 2k and measure the exhaust pipe in front of the cat and then behind, the rear measurement should be hotter, if it's not, the cat's not working correctly.

I would check fuel pressure first. There is a schrader valve on the fuel rail, passenger side, that you will hook a gauge up to. This will help you check fuel pressure while cranking/running as well as a leak down for injector/regulator problems.
If that all checks out, next step would be checking spark since you smell unburnt fuel. Welcome to the site and let us know what you find. Matthew |

gotta love the cheap fixes!
I recommend a fuel filter swap annually on these cars. They have a tendency to sit and accumulate moisture... not good. |
