That's a pretty low profile but good news none the less for 16" wheels. I'll have to check it out because both our 911's sport 16" wheels. |

That was stock until they went to the 17-inch option in 1988. It's funny to remember how big those wheels and how low profile those tires looked in 1984. My wife's new base Corvette has 285/35-19s in the rear. |

I'm thinking around that of the previous generation - $125/$150 each (just a guess). |

This is a great reason to switch to 17s or 17 and 18 staggered....plenty of tires to choose from plus your car will look better and handle better

might as well get 18's, the selection on 17's is limited and isn't going to get better. |

^^Is that true?? I hadn't heard that at all.
So, I need to be sourcing me two more 18s for the front? and just run 18s squared? |

The choices are limited compared to 5 years ago, probably by at least 50%.
They are out there. I ended up with Hankooks because they were $250 (4) less than everything else. Satisfied so far. There's just more selection in 18's. |

And that's the thing would have to buy rims also, don't have that kinda coin. Figure that when they come out, and I get a set, will be good for quite a long time, seeing as she is not a daily driver. Also spending the money on rims for an 84 doesn't seem real worthy. Don't get me wrong, would be cool to have some badass looking rims! Just doesn't seem justifiable. And a BIG happy Bday Gurus!!! Dig on this place, have learned alot, even if it didn't have anything to do with my year!!1

yea... even the Michelin tech, speaking at Sebring in the Corvette Corral made reference to some 17" sizes becoming less available. I do think that the Corvette's 275/40/17 will stay, but the 315 and 255 widths are going to get hard to find. You figure that the 275's were also used on Mustangs and F-Bodies, so there are a lot of other cars that used them. But think of the plight of the Lambo Countach owner. They have these monster wide 15" things (335, I think), and NO ONE IS MAKING THEM!!! There has been a call out for a small batch, but even then, only Pirelli made them. Michelin does not like having tires stay on the shelves more than 6 months, so they only sell sizes that, well, sell. And since they are a batch maker (a whole bunch of one size at a time), they are not going to be offering certain tires in unpopular sizes. I asked about the new PS2 Cup's, these are the shit, yo, but there are no plans of offering them in the 275/40/17 size. Period. |

I run a set of Yokohama (520YK) 245 55 16
They didnt have a set of 255 16 when I got them 2 years ago 600000 mile tire or they could be If I keep my foot out of it LOL. They stop making them so when I need tires next time I going to up grade to 18 inch rims I thinking going with 295 35 18 on all 4's. The one big draw back about going with the 18 inch rims makes the stock brakes look small so it will be time for the BIG brake upgrade at the same time . |

I'm no sure where you live, but, C5 wheels come up for sale on Craigslist every month for ~$300 a set...some even with descent rubber. On an '84 you'll have to spacer the rears, but the fronts bolt right up. |

If you store them right, they will last... hit them with tire treatment, then bag them, and store them in a dark place in the garage.

I went a slightly different route last winter. The ones on my 86 were about 10 yrs old and I looked for replacements. Weren't available at that time. I had 16"x9.5" rims with 38mm backspacing. I found if you went with 18"x9.5" 40mm backspace rims, they fit. Then go with 255x40zr18" tires and they fit the fender wells like the originals. The main difference was 1" less sidewall.
I've run them now since last Feb and they've worked out just fine. I think the only thing I did was add 2 psi pressure to get accurate footprint on them otherwise no changes. They fit and track well plus there are a whole lot more 18" than 16" tires. The new tires are same BFG's as ones on the car just a little bigger rim. If anyone wants the info, send me a note and happy to let you know where I got them (assume it's not proper etiquette to put it in here). Funny thing, I got the rims cheaper through a reseller than I could through the seller/vendor site. |
