The Band did not achieve the commercial success of some other rock groups, but most people know their hits "The night they drove old Dixie down, "Up on Cripple Creek" and "The Weight" all of which featured Levon Helm's southern drawl vocals.
He also played drums and stringed instruments especially the mandolin. The Band backed Dylan when he "went electric".
One of my all time favorite groups. Levon, also a great solo artist, had throat cancer, RIP.

I have an album or two in my archives. Classic material. Down to earth music. Folksy, bluesy, bayou kind of thing with a touch of rock and brass. Time marches on. One by one all the oldtimers are going.

That means I'm getting to be an oldtimer. (Though not quite ther yet)

I was glad to hear that Robbie Robertson finally visited him near the end. RIP, Levon.

Many moons ago, I stumbled into "The Last Waltz" on PBS - a mid-80s pledge break.

I was fixated. I watched that damned thing, pledge breaks and all...I couldn't. They played one song I recognized, then was left with this "who are these guys?" feeling. A few songs later, another... and another... and the performance from the Last Waltz is just epic...

In the early 90s, I was able to see them in concert at a local bar. No Robbie Robertson, but Levon was there... excellent show.

Their name, for come clarification, was the Band, simply because they were Bob Dylan and the Band. So that stuck. And the became legends in their own time. Robbie's music, Levon's voice.
