Just spent about an hour (slow learner) reading about VATS, and did
not find a suitable lubrication for the ignition. Some posts suggested that WD40 & graphite were taboo. Some posts suggested cleaning with alcohol was sufficient. My keys work just fine, but I ordered 2 double-sided blanks (#5 ) for 3.25/ea., just in case. My ignition and keys are 20 years old. Should the mechanism and keys be lubricated? |

Not with any lube that leaves a residual of any kind, which really means no lube. I have sprayed a little electrical
contact cleaner in the key slot and wiped the key pellet with brake clean, but that is about all. |

Thanks, Andy....... I see the key word is 'pellet' that should be cleaned. |

Use some rubbing alcohol or contact cleaner on the key.
On a somewhat related note, Brad was having a problem turning the lock cylinder and found out this good piece of advice: http://www.corvetteguruforum.com/modu ... hp?topic_id=17415&forum=1 |

Thanks, Matthew....... I remember reading that thread, but forgot about it. Reading the reviews of customers using the product from HD, some say the locks became 'frozen' after applying graphite. |

That's interesting...maybe they used too much graphite? I can't really say.

I'm really big on preventive maintainence.
BUT some things like VATS, fall under "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Lubing the ign. switch is not a good idea. |

I got into the habit years ago of wiping both sides of the ignition key on my pants (unless they're sweaty or grungy!) before inserting the key into the lock cylinder. No VATS problems so far here!

Thanks for the info, SJW. Wonder if cords, denim, or gabardine material would make a difference? My curiosity of wear was more towards the key 'teeth', rather than the pellets. The keys seem to last much longer than I would have anticipated. I bought two extra keys just for a 'security blanket'. |

Oh geeze...the "teeth" part of the key should last 100,000 miles. I replaced mine at 90,000 with a new one because it was showing some wear. Just make sure once you cut a new key you start using that key and use the old one as the spare.

Thanks, Matthew........ I'm curious if Andy Bogus has replaced his keys for his 'million mile' vette. Good advice on using my new keys immediately. |

Original keys on my 95 have gone over 240,000. They just don't wear out.

Doesn't matter Don. Besides, IF you experience a VATS problem, 95% of the time,it won't be the key. And it will be rare if you ever do. BTW, my car "grew up" in Vacaville. |

If you have a problem 95% of the time it is greasy fingerprints on the key.
