I did some maintenance this weekend on our Cherokee...

The TPS needs replacing... and can I get the damned thing off? They are T25 bolts that won't hold in the screw...

Annoying.

I have found a fix for the overheating problem. The damned temp sensor for the IP was bad!

Drove out to Fontana and the temps never got about half way!

Also found the weatherpack connector for the 2nd fan had busted... leaving the 2nd fan disconnected!! a wire tie fixed that.

Good thing you are knowlegable Andy. You have to keep at least one of them roadworthy. My cars don't break down much in my driveway.

Zip-ties are right up there with duct tape and WD-40 as go-to solutions.

@Tommy - when something is immobile, it's indistinguishable from being stored or just plane broke....

@Brad - yup. That and safety wire.

Here is a list of suggested items you should have in your vehicle in case of emergency. I think I have a spare tire though I don't know if there is air in them. I have a cellphone. That's about it. Sometimes, on longer road trips, I have some tools, jumpers, air pump, etc. Check out this list.

Glad you got the issues worked out, Andy. I use zip ties for all kinds of little things like that.

I keep a little road safety kit in the back of my Xterra....I generally use it to help other people and not myself. But at least I have it if I need it.

You guys are over the top with all your fancy duct tape and zip ties.

All I keep handy are my AAA card, cell phone, and ice chest full of Heineken.

Andy, my largest complaint against Jeeps is all of the torx bolts. Man, I hate them. As I remove one, I replace them.

Oh, the thermostat housing is also annoying. They like to get hairline cracks in them, causing coolant leaks that are near impossible to find. I just went through that whole problem.

Hey, bailing wire, duct tape, zip ties, and JB weld are necessities with a Jeep...

You mention the hairline cracks... that's been a problem since forever. My 76 pacer had that problem with the 258ci version of this engine. And yes, I hate the Torx bolts too... pain in the ass.

A little history... going backwards, the 4.0 litre is the end of the line, but prior, AMC had a 3.8 and 4.2 version, they came out in 1964 or so. Prior to that, there was a flat head and an OHV I-6 that dated back to post war, 1948, and were an improvement upon the original Nash I-6 from like 1925.

In short, that engine can be traced back over 80 years.
