So I will ask the question. What is data logging? I have the idea that it is a way to plug in a computer program and discover how your car is running.
What type of machine do you use? How do you interpret the data?
Does it explain why your chewing gum loses its flavor on the bedpost overnight?

My gum keeps it's flavor.

But it's a cherry bedpost.

Datalogging is rather easy...

First off, you need a laptop computer.

Then you need a cable that will connect your car to the computer... and then software... TunerCat is the one to get.

This will then "log" readings from the computer in real time.

From there, you can see when a sensor drops out, or something fails, or a spike that shouldn't be.

The data cab be viewed inside the program, or, in a spread sheet. Take a look at the attachment, it's an Excel 2003 format spreadsheet of the data elements taken from my 92 Vette.

Consider it to be an electronic EKG for your car.

Attach file:

xls SampleDatalog.xls Size: 140.00 KB; Hits: 171

After you collect the data then you mail it to a place like PCMs for less and they use it to "remodel" your chip?
Thanks! Very informative!

I went to the TunerCat website. Now have more questions. Can you even do this on a pre-1992 Corvette? It did not look like they had an option for the older C4s.

Works on any car with an aldl.

Tunercat and tunerpro are a couple programs you can use.

Check out moates.net for cables, etc.

This one:

$6E 1227165 89 Y & F CAR 5.0L & 5.7L 27C128

I hate their site... one url, too many frame.

Go to there downloads section, at the top, there is a link for "ECM definitions" that's where you find the item above. Under Chevy Cars.

TunerPro RT is the program of choice for tuning ( and datalogging ) 85 - 91 L98 cars
but as mentioned by aboatguy ,Datamaster is popular for data logging as it has a much better GUI for play back of recorded logs as
opposed to looking at a spreadsheet full of numbers

You must talk with my wife! She says that all the time while shaking her head. In fact, she came out to my garage last night to tell me dinner was ready. She looked around at all the parts spread on tables around the garage and at my half gutted engine and said, "This thing will never run again".
