Life is tough when you're clueless.

I went to Summitracing looking for an oil pan gasket, because I can pick the parts up there. Looked for a Felpro for my 87, I find two. Once again I'm challenged, (in a short bus kind of way).

Here's what I found:

http://store.summitracing.com/partdet ... OS34500R&autoview=sku

And

http://store.summitracing.com/partdet ... 886&view=1&N=700+

Is the 2nd one overkill for a non racer? Or would it give me longer/better service?
And would it make sense to buy the new bolts?
Thanks.

Yes, the top gasket (blue one). The instructions will say to install the gasket dry, but adding some of this on both sides assures a proper leak free seal. You don't want to do this chit twice. Mine has no leaked in years with this setup.

The gasket will want to shift at the front timing cover lip as you try to reinstall the pan. The right stuff helps keep it put while you raise and secure the pan back onto the block than if it where dry. I used the 4 supplied blue plastic studs that help hold the gasket up for you. But I cut the two front ones shorter so they would clear the front of the pan better.

I'm running the blue one also and
if memory serves me right, the new
bolts came in the box with the gasket.
I installed mine dry, absolutely no
leaks whatsoever. One tip to remember,
if your pan bolt holes are pulled in from
overtightening take a ball peen and tap
them back smooth again to ensure
positive sealing. You can get these
gaskets at Auto Zone, Summit is a great
place for a lot of things but why pay
"handling" charges when you don't have to?
Also, you will walk out of the store with
gasket in hand. I'd like to add that this
is one of the very few reasons Auto Zone
is good.

I also use RTV silicone on my gaskets usually black . I have used the right stuff as well - works as advertised but you pay a premium price to be able to use it within 15 minutes

I used the top one with great success. Just make sure the dipstick is on the correct side. It was good quality IMO.

I got mine at Autozone. Save the shipping. Just bought VC gaskets there too. They carry all Felpro products. $10 shipping on a $30 item doesn't make a lot of sense, plus, they had mine in stock.

Yea, it costs more but I do find that it reduces leakage better. I've used tons of ultra black and blue especially on gearboxes ( I have to change rear ratios on 1st thru 4th for different roadcourses) and find that the RTV won't stop all the leaks but the Right Stuff does. And the auto mfgrs. use it on cast pans, etc without gaskets. It's all I use anymore.

But the black RTV will do a pretty good job. When I do use it and have the time, I just snug up all the bolts and let it sit for a couple hours before I torque the bolts.

BillH- good food for thought so to speak. Next time I will try the right stuff on a valve cover issue I am having Mostly I do the black RTV as you describe as time is not an issue for me . But like you said some things are notorious for leaks

I had a Fuel regulator problem once and was driving from Ohio to MD. The X said stop there(summit) they were open on a sunday! Had all the parts, was cold installing them(in winter) but they were good people there! Cannot say enough about the staff there and an impressive showroom

Very nice people, and a trip there can be fun, even if you don't buy anything. They always have 2 show cars upfront. Discount items, new stuff, so buying from them is a bonus for me.

no bolts... They do include these blue thingys that help support the gasket... but the C4 chassis gets in the way.

That's funny, I'm 5 miles from the Summit store too, oops, different town, different Summit store.

Ain't it Great? No shipping/handling charges. Even on the stuff they had to ship from the other warehouses had no shipping charges and it cames to my house.

I've never been in the store when there was less than 5 people in there and I don't go there on weekends anymore. It's just too crowded on weekends.

I've never used anything I like as much as this stuff. One thing, I would suggest buying it in the tube for use in a caulk gun, it's less expensive that way. And they're suggestion to leave about 1 inch sticking out of the tube when you're done really works. I had a tube that sat for 8 months, pulled the dry stuff out and it flowed like new.

Where the heck is Robesonia? I grew up in Chambersburg.
