Need help in identifying this steering gear box. Its currently on a 1955 cj3b willy's jeep but a lot of parts came from a 1962 impala. Any ideas? Thanks.

Yea, Frank, that's a GM Saginaw, millions of them produced.

Probably used on some cars/trucks by all the U.S. manufacturers for a very long time.

You need the casting number and size of the splines to correctly identify it but that will probably show that it was used on a lot of vehicles.

Get the number and type "Saginaw" with that number into Google.

BTW, it looks a lot like the one I have on a shelf in my shop (67 C2).

Thanks Bill. Great information. I was able to get a number off of the casting. 5666723-13. I'd really like to rebuild it just so I can get into it.

AND, you can usually get one (or very similar) at a salvage yard for around $50.

Believe it or not I found both a rebuild kit or a remanufactured box at Ecklers. Thanks for all your inputs.

My '87 had that 'sleeping sickness' that many early c4's had in the steering when cold, but I think that was a different steering function...

Nope. This steering box goes into my 1955 CJ3B Willys Jeep. I posted it here because these guy's really know their stuff. I also posted it on a Willy's Jeep Forum and as of yet have not heard a thing. This Site is hands down the best.

Problem with rebuild kits is they don't give you new gears. If the gears are too worn the box is worthless, according to 2 rebuilders I spoke to. They do their best to pick through the useable gears and shim/adjust them properly. That screw and jam nut on top is where you adjust lash.

I took the opportunity to swap the box for a variable ratio box from Redhead. Less sensitive in the middle of travel and more steering at the ends of travel for parking and tight maneuvers. I don't know if those are available for the manual boxes.
