How big of a fuel tank do some of yall have? Or does anyone have a custom tank/cell?

I was wanting to delete my antennae and move my battery with cutoff switch and charging ports to the back and have a custom tank made with a sump and baffles to get rid of my slosh issue during autox.

I wont know how big I can get it until I pull the bumper and tank but was hoping for 20+ gallons using as much room as I can.

I think 20 is the reasonable max for the stock location. The way it's mounted is limited.

Do a search on custom fuel cells, here on the Guru. I ran into a company a few years back that makes custom cells for anything, really.

If it was me, I would consider moving the cell inside the hatch, so as to place it farther inboard, but it would still be really high.

Another thought would be to have something custom made to fit where the spare does. That could be done, I think... and with a racing cell, it would be safe from impact damage.

Moving the battery to the back is something I want to do, too... leaves me room up front for a sump or what not down the road. I have seen installs where the battery is under the car, in the area of the spare. This only works with an optima... lead acid would leak laying sideways.

I will have to dig through papers to find the ppl making the fuel cells. I am trying to remember where I saw them, I think it was Sebring 3-4 years ago.

IIRC, they were based in like Wisconsin or Minnesota.

But there are tons of cell mfgs out there who will make anything you want.

I know of a company that does it but will need to get dimensions and price it out.

I was thinking meth tank where the battery currently is or cold air intake to the gill if I decide to go supercharger.

modify the gill with a NACA duct... that will help suck the air in faster and look cool.

I use ATI cells but never had them make one.

You'd be in for WAY less money if you used one of their catalog ones.

http://www.atlinc.com/racing.html

As far as the sloshing, other C4's don't seem to have a problem autocrossing or on the track.

How much fuel do you run?

Depends on how many runs I PLAN to do. Usually try to keep it a half tank or less.

Another reason I am going to a cell/custom tank is for a sump to use an external fuel pump.

My stock one has a leak somewhere and I can smell gas. Been this way for a few years and like everything I upgrade when I replace.

I ran on the track today with a half tank.

Probably your pump, pickup, etc.
But that's a reason not to go to a cell especially with the external pump thing.

If you can get the measurements where the stock tank is, I'd bet ATI has something in the catalog that would be close. I see a lot of different ones at the track.

Are you saying a sump and external pump are not advised in roadracing/autox?

No absolutely not. Saying go for it if you want to.
Probably poor wording, yea after reading it poor. I's saying that I think that problem is in the pump/system and even if a new pump/lines could fix it, you still could put a cell in if you want to.

But, we 5 or so C4's that autocross with stock tanks and 2 or 3 on the big track with no problems.

I started out with a half tank today and ran about an hour total, down to 1/4 with no hickups.

For whatever reason, some C4's are bad about the fuel slosh and some are not.

My 92 is terrible.... if I have less than 1/2 a tank it will cut out on launch at the drag strip... it's the same in hard corners.

I'd suggest you try to make an internal fuel sump of some kind first.... lots of people have used plastic liter bottles around the fuel pump to solve this problem.... I just have never got around to it on my 92.

I hate to link anybody to the SOB's that run CF but the old posters there did have some good knowlege. Here is a thread that has some links to pics (post #20 and #21) and a write up (post #11) of how people use a liter plastic bottle around the pump to make a bigger fuel sump.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-te ... ers-on-hard-throttle.html

Another option. The way the stock tank is shaped it's perfect for one of those weld on fuel pick up sumps like Competition Engineering mfgrs.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cee ... Lrh_tTtjrgCFWIV7AodQBAALQ

This would make running an external pump easy and it's inexpensive.

Your other option would be a fuel cell. 22 gallon is what we run in our late models. These have a rubber bladder, plastic outer shell with a 2 pc metal can to mount them. -8AN pick up tube. Very easy to make up a mounting system (2 bars across the impact sub frame is how I have one mounted on my 84 drag car) in the back of a C4 Corvette. Even with fabricating the mounting bars you'd be about $300-$350 turn key.

Do you think the windage tray is broken of your 92?

The RCI you use is mounted under the hatch or in the stock location?

Great information and what I was looking for.

As my tank is already 'broken' and I am replacing the rear bumper all the hard work will be done and I can run a bigger wire setup to support a nice pump setup.

Melrose in Chicago has a rear fuel cell support you can bolt in in place of the stock bumper frame. I think it was $350 or so.

If you are or know a fabricator you can easily make the same thing yourself. There's not much back there, just a way to hold the tank and bumper up.

Get an AT! cell, way cheaper than a custom. There is lots of room as Will mentions, 22 gal would fit.

I have a much smaller 5 gallon fuel cell in my 84 (which is a drag car). It's mounted in stock location under the decklid with the fuel cap right under the factory fuel door.

The mounting system I used on mine would be similar to what you need to mount one of those 22 gallon RCI Cells.

Here are a pic of how my stuff is mounted.

No the little plastic fuel sump/baffel was there when I put the Warboro 255LPH pump in the car back in 2006.

Not sure why my 92 is so bad about cutting out when the fuel level is less than 1/2 tank.... One day I'll get a plastic gear lube bottle or something and build a sump for it.

Build me one, too. My car is awful, around 1/4 tank it cuts out in corners and under acceleration. I took the car out with the new engine for the first time Saturday and it cut out on me. Squared the sh!t out of me until I looked at the fuel level. I thought something broke.

One of the vendors, DRM? Exotic Muscle??, makes a fuel cell to go where the stock tank is.

that would be the way to go

that way all the safety issues are addressed

I've seen them where the spare is, but you need to brace it. the steel part of the frame doesn't go all the way back

their website isn't the best

give them a call

Gulstrand should have something as well, great guy to talk to

depending on who you autocross with, you need to check the tech rules

the tank on a stock car can be a POS, but as soon as you modify they up the regs

Found a company to make me a custom tank with baffles, sump, AN bungs for fuel line, and mounting screws for the external pump and pre/post filters.

They are just awaiting measurements when I drop the tank.

Oh did I mention aluminum? Should be slightly lighter and sturdier than stock.
