I am installing a mini ram. I will be removing the EGR since the new manifold has no provision for it. At a later date I will be installing headers and will be removing the air system. Have any of you gutted the air pump before? What is involved? Of course I know I could go with the eliminator.

You should just go with an eliminator....

I've never heard how this is done. but the only resistance is air over the impellers. Take those away from the equation and you have effectively gutted the air pump.

Just picture taking the blades of a Fan. Watch that motor spin the hub.

If nothing else, open it up and just grind the blades off

I gutted mine and it made a howling

my own eliminator. I you can measure
and have access to a welder it's not
hard at all. If you wanted you could
even bolt one together and not need
the welder. Just take a good look at
one, it's not hard to duplicate.

What kind of gain do you get from gutting or removing? There does not seem to be hardly any resistance, mine spun pretty free when I had it off the car.

I got no noticable difference by removing mine. I did get a cleaner looking engine bay. I bought a used eliminator from ebay recently, came with everything but the 2 bolts. It was up on a buy it now or best offer for $120. I offered $100 and he took it. He had more so if you are interested maybe you could pick one up for $100 used. Looked about like new.

My air pump was about to take a dump anyway. I started to gut it, then thought, WTF? Why bother?

removed it, installed the eliminator, and cleared out major room in the engine bay

HP gain? IDK? SOTP feel? yes. Actual #'s? Who knows?

Did lose an appreciable amount of WEIGHT from the engine though as a bonus

I am removing the EGR and Air system on the car. I am installing a miniram which has no provision for EGR. I am trying to save a few bucks at this time.

I gutted the are pump. It was not hard. I haven't had a chance to run it yet because the car is still apart. At some later point I will install the eliminator.

It's a pain in the ass to gut it. There are composite fins and you have to break them inside the pump to remove them, takes a big screwdriver, a hammer, and some bruised knuckles.

There's also little teflon sliders in there you'll want to fish out or they could come loose later.
