The '86 block , as I understand it, was the 1st with 1 pc rear main seal. What year did the block start with provisions for the roller cam? If I search for a roller cam block, what years did they show up in the trucks and other vehicles?

1987, for sure. but I think the roller cam, one piece and aluminum heads are all the same.

Dave is right, upon conferring to my Black Book, 1987 is the first year for roller lifters. Added 5hp by removing friction.

Just to add to Andy's comment..... It is not just the increase in power , you also have much less wear & tear on the valve train , & you don't have to worry about adding zinc additives like with flat tappet cams!

Just be aware that some 1987 truck blocks will have the stands cast in the lifter valley for the spider hold down but they may not be drilled and tapped by the factory.
Same with the cam retainer provision on the front of the block. It will be machned flat but won't be drilled.... or it will be drilled with the small bolt pattern.... GM used 2 different bolt patterns on the cam retainer for factory roller blocks. PITA sometimes. Will |

I believe in 87 the aluminum heads where on all models while in 86 the coupe had the cast iron and the convertible had aluminum heads. Just insuring that's what you intended to say. Depends on the cylinder block casting number.... But as Will mentioned above , there are to different bolt patterns for the cam thrust plate
|
