Never paid much attention to these til I started working with them, Im impressed. For a small head they would do great on a long tube runner intake (TPI). Has "winged" valve guide bosses like the AFRs do, nice ports even a nice 3 angle valve job stock.
Just a quickie job for another member whos on a tight budget.... Next round promise Ill have a better camera...Man, this iron dust is nasty stuff.

Both bowls, removed some sharp edges in the chamber, exhaust fully ported, intake runners deflashed and contoured just a bit.

This is only half of the mess...Think I inhaled the rest.

Is it common to redrill these for the traditional intake bolt pattern?

I'd love to run some cheap vortecs but the $400 intake base is a deterrent.

A lot of guys drill their intakes out to use the Vortec heads from what I understand. No EGR, either afaik.
May want to verify this as Im not super hip to these heads.
It would seem best to use a dedicated intake for Vortec

Im going to do a little more intake work and flow them out of my pocket next week just to see where they are at, Im curious. THese are a nice head, GM did their homework on this one. IMO xlnt for the money.

Well Ive discovered after the fact the 906 heads are the ones NOT to use. Anyway...

Results tonight were skewed being as the factory valve job was so bad the valves didnt seal (coulda fooled me, they looked Ok) so there was some leakage on both sides.

Results inconclusive. Wish the owner woulda popped for a lousy 3 angle, guess things are tight.
I still think these would do real well # wise But Ill never know .
My charity work is done.

That's too bad. How much do you charge for a port job on stock heads? I think I have a number in my head that you may have mentioned that was very reasonable. What's going rate at a shop?

Thanks,

Matthew

Depends on the head and what you want done. Could be anywhere from a few hundred to $850 for a balls out porting job.
Ive come down a bit to keep the pieces coming in.
Shoot me a pm, Ill deal with ya. Every set comes with a flow sheet so its documented and can be double checked. .

What about using GMPP Fast Burn Vortec Heads? Pace has them for $679 each complete and they have a dual intake bolt pattern.

Yeah but regular vortecs are $500-600 new assembled for both.

I have lots of options at $1300.

Where are you seeing that price? I went to Scoggins Dickey and they have Votecs at $500-600 each. Maybe I'm looking at modified ones.

Get the ones Central Coaster put up, the 060 casting, you can really make those heads cook.
Supposdly there is an exhaust port issue with the 906 and they are to be avoided.

Once the valve job gets done (trying to sweet talk someone into doing one cyl so I can get the valves to seal and see what they really flow)I may have a different opinion.

Do I see an internal EGR port?

Resized Image

Oh boy oh boy I want to get those and have em redrilled for the standard intake. Or maybe try redrilling my baseplate...

Looks like it, Id double check. On these 906 there is a spot where it looks like it would be but its blocked off. Make sure they go throuhg. Those would be great on a warmed over 350 or a mild stroker

They will bolt up to your heads, but the intake baseplate will not bolt up. You need to pay extra for a vortec base, or else get them drilled for the standard intake.

The info in the summit catalog is really unreliable, use it for pricing, but for anything else, check with the manufacturer or elsewhere.
