Hey everyone. My driver side rear axle seal is leaking and I'm wondering if the entire differential needs to come out to replace it? If so, any tips? Easy job? Thanks!

I will have to check the FSM, as I've never done it. Not sure if you need to remove the diff from the car first. Bear with me.

I've read through my FSM, but to be completely honest, I know nothing about differentials. I'm pretty sure I have to, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't a shortcut or something. Thanks for the help!

It would probably be easiest to remove the diff from the chassis.
The cover/batwing has to come off in order to get the snap ring off the inner stub axel... which has to come out to change the seal.... which means the halfshaft has to be separated from the inner stub axel. Pretty involved job either way for a simple side seal. Not difficult, just involved. I can have the diff out of a C4 in about 45mins. Will |

Thanks for the reply. That's not really what I wanted to hear, but I kind of figured it was the case.

If you have not yet done the repair, make sure you have a stout set of lock ring pliers on hand. The clips that hold the axles in are a BEAR to pop loose.
