Sex Offender Wins $57 Million in Lottery
AP
Posted: 2008-06-19 18:03:59
LANSING, Mich. (June 19) - The winner of last week's $57 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot is a registered sex offender who also pleaded guilty to two breaking and entering charges in the 1980s.

Fred Topous Jr., 45, was discharged from Michigan Department of Corrections supervision in October 2006.
The Kent City man traveled to Lansing on Tuesday to claim the prize from Friday's drawing in the multistate game. Topous chose to take the prize as a $34 million lump sum payment, before taxes.

Topous said he planned to buy a house, send his children to college and have some fun with his winnings. He said he and his wife work multiple jobs to make ends meet and thought they'd have to work till they died.

"I want to enjoy a little bit of life," Topous told state lottery officials. "We're plain folks. We've struggled all our lives."

According to the Corrections Department's offender profile, Topous pleaded guilty to breaking and entering charges in 1984 and 1988 and to assault with intent to commit sexual penetration in 1999. In the latter case, Topous was charged with having sex with a 13-year-old girl, USA Today reported.

All three offenses occurred in Grand Traverse County. Prosecutor Alan Schneider said Wednesday that he wasn't familiar with the cases.

The Michigan Lottery told Grand Rapids television station WOOD that anyone can play the lottery except those under 18 and those who work for the agency.

"He's had some tough breaks," friend and co-worker Jan Westcott told The Grand Rapids Press. "I know some of his secrets, and he knows some of mine. I'm not going any further."

A telephone message was left with Topous on Wednesday night.

I would suspect that he's already been punished for his crimes. So I don't see why this is even news.

I agree. If you did some dumb stuff almost 10 years ago I am sure you would want to forget it. Now what he did was totally wrong and IMO is worth the death sentance but thats todays world, do something wrong, get a slap on the wrist and then get a chance to do it again.

my problem is that he is a sex offender. History indicates that they have a strong tendency to repeat.

Top that off with the fact he did it with a 13 YO girl just adds to my disgust. I don't really care if he has "paid the price." Winning this lotto is a bit annoying.

I guess I just don't like the fact that often people (victim/victim's family) can't be happy unless the other person (offender) is miserable.

The guy could give them $34 million or even jump off a tall building, but that doesn't fix what happened.

I am in favor of the death penalty for:

Sexually violent crimes

Crimes committed with a firearm

Premeditated murder

Driving too slow in the left lane

Putting on makeup while driving

...oh, excuse me. I should stop now.

Sex offenders have a habit of going back to their old habits CC thats why we seem out of sorts about this. You are right he has had his punishment, but who wants to bet he opens a home or something like that for abused children and is seen in the news in the not too distant future....

Sex offenders/Thiefs/Alcoholics/Drug Users/Child Abusers/Criminals/Poor decision makers, have a habit of going back to their old habits.

But there's really not much you can or should do about it in a free society if they've already served their time.

Just because they've served their time doesn't mean we have to like them. The government feels the same way - which is why sex offenders have to register for a certain period of time (and stay current), felons don't have the right to vote, can't own firearms, etc, etc.

The principle of this post was that sex offenders are not at the top of my "likable" list, even if they have already been punished.

You don't have to like a sex offender, they just have to like you!

Doesn't that only apply to incarcerated ones? I don't see any harm in letting a felon vote. There are lots of felons. Probably a few on this forum.

US Supreme Court has ruled it is not illegal to disenfranchise felons, but states have the choice. There are a variety of different situations, some states you can vote in jail, some you can vote after release, some after parole, some never.
