I looked at an '84 with the odomotor showing 68000 for 5K in decent shape. Carfax showed an emissions test two years ago ad 125000. The owner says the odomotor's are tamper proof and the 125000 was a mistake. The peddals look unworn but I'm sceptical.

Not sure about tamper proof. But sometimes the folks that write down the mileage can make a mistake...

I wonder if the cluster was replaced with whatever that computer part is that shows the mileage?

If it runs good, and checks out nicely, offer 4k. Even with the higher mileage, I'd stil hit it!

the odo on 84 to 89 vettes is not tamper proof. it is very vulnerable to modification.

it could have been replace... or just misread.

check the carfax for 4 years ago... see what the mileage was then.

Whack em on the work bench with a battery connected to them til they roll over the 1,000,000 mark and itll say 0 miles again.

Andy is correct - folks on the restoration side of the C4 hobby don't trust the early C4 odometers at all: we use other data to judge mileage. I would trust the Carfax more, and I can't believe I'm saying that ...

I had the same thing happen on my 88 I bought. There were 2 glitches in the Carfax. One showed that when bringing the car from one state to another that 45,000 miles had been put on it in 13 days. (This was way back in early 90's.

Then there was a glitch showing 50k on it while the guy I bought it from owned it. It was evident they hit a 5 instead of a 3. He had the paperwork from that inspection showing it was written down as a 3.

These inspection stations do make mistakes. It was evident by looking at my 88 that the miles were original. He filed a claim with Carfax and they took those numbers out.

Figure out the miles/year. How long did it take to accumulate those miles, vs what the odo says now? Could be a typo during smog or change of ownership. Although you'll have to justify it to everyone when trying to sell it if they check carfax.

Maybe the cluster was replaced. The odo's can easily be messed with either way.

Carfax is only as accurate as the state agencies doing the reporting.

I used to work where I could see DMV records, and I did some random comparisons against Carfax data... I did this mostly when I was shopping for my Vette... and I found the Carfax data to be rather accurate.

Owner should have maintenance records documenting the mileage.

Carfax isn't always correct, but if there's no evidence to contradict it then I'd trust it over a seller.

I run carfax on all my cars when I'm shopping for a new car. A few months ago I learned that my vette was titled with a lien in NV in '06. Which is interesting since it was in my garage in PA at the time...
